The BBC illustrate their report of the crashed Russian aeroplane with a map of the Sinai.

Now this map doesn't name Egypt's neighbours, and the BBC standard explanation for that is that it is their convention not to name countries that aren't pertinent to the story. Whatever you think of that explanation, the BBC are at least fairly consistent in the way that they apply it.

Now take a second look at that map, do you spot the omission? To the north east of the Sinai is Israel, however much the BBC might wish it wasn't, but also is Gaza. Odd that the BBC don't mark this territory separately. If I had the time I might create a fake identity, that of a obsessive supporter of the Palestinian people, and complain that the BBC were guilty of wiping Gaza off the map - but  don't!

Parts of London have higher TB rates than Iraq or Rwanda per BBC News

The BBC report that parts of London now have a rate of tuberculosis infection higher than Rwanda or Iraq. The BBC report is keen to persuade is not to blame this on immigration:

'The rate of infection among UK-born Londoners has risen, while among the non-UK-born it has fallen - and the report said it would be wrong to assume TB was a disease of migrants.'

Of course rates are not measures of absolute numbers and that last section isn't saying what the BBC wants you to think that it is. 

The BBC want you to think that line says that it would be wrong to assume TB was a disease caused by immigration. Whereas it actually means that TB is no longer a disease just of migrants because it has spread.

I read that BBC report and was reminded of a report I read back in the early 2000s that said that mass immigration from Eastern Europe was bringing with it TB, a disease that had all but been eradicated from the UK. I seem to remember that claim being dismissed as racist at the time and the fuss went away, unlike the TB.

Take a look at this New Scientist report  from January this year. Here's a section that needs wider attention:

'Russia and Eastern Europe still have high rates of MDR TB today. Spiro says that many of the cases he sees in London, the TB capital of Europe, can be traced back to those countries. "The control over treatment regimes out there is dreadful," he says. "It's chaos." The number of MDR cases has been rising in England from 28 cases per year in 2000 to 81 cases in 2012.'

So do you believe the, so far as I am aware, independent New Scientist or the decidedly pro immigration BBC? The choice is yours.

Intersting that Iain Dale admits defeat, not that he was wrong. Also interesting that you could get a job as a financial journalist in the late 1980s with just a C in GCSE Maths.

Oddly the matter didn't end there, as one of Iain Dale's team decided to try and curry favour with his boss.

Quite tragic and very tedious? Well if getting rather irritated when a public figure tells me that I'm wrong about a fairly simple mathematical calculation is tragic and if pushing for that public figure to acknowledge their error is tedious then I am guilty of being both. Indeed I'd rather be tragic and tedious about accuracy than cavalier about the truth.

Doctor Who - the new series - a quickie

My views of the latest series of Doctor Who are very mixed. In short I loved the first episode (The Magician's Apprentice), enjoyed the second (The Witch's Familiar) mostly for the sense of connectedness with the past that it engendered, was interested by the third (Under The Lake), tired of the fourth (Before The Flood) and was bored and irritated by the fifth (The Girl Who Died). I will put up reviews and thoughts at some future date, work must take priority over blogging at the moment, but in the meantime one squee moment on The Girl Who Died was The Doctor saying that he was "reversing the polarity of the neutron flow" - I was instantly transported back in time myself - about 40 years.

A most interesting scene in The Magician's Apprentice was when Colony Sarff (a seriously great creation) visited the planet Karn in his/its/their search for The Doctor, there he meets the Sisterhood of Karn who tell Sarff to leave and deliver the message to them. It is suggested that unknown to Sarff, the Doctor was listening. Planet Karn, the Sisterhood of Karn? You need to have watched the mini episode entitled The Night of the Doctor that preceded The two parter The Day of the Doctor. This mini episode explains the regeneration known as The War Doctor, if you haven't seen it then you should have...



Now does Planet Karn make sense? And nice to see the Ninth Doctor again.

So if the Doctor can, at least if he regenerates on Karn, have some choice as to his next regeneration's attrivutes and appearance does that go someway to explaining why the Twelth Doctor bears a surprising resemblance to Caecilius from The Fires of Pompeii? But the Eleventh Doctor regenerated into the Twelth Doctor in the TARDIS.

As an aside, note that the Sisterhood of Karn offer The Doctor the choice of "man or woman", does that mean that The Master regenerated on Karn or was his regeneration into Missy random? Either way the possibility of their being a female Doctor seems higher, that would be a mistake I feel but then I'm not in charge of Doctor Who.

I have seen this MSNBC graphic on Twitter, Facebook and elsewhere. Usually it's been posted by ignorant or deluded anti-Israel, often actually anti-Semitic, types who were quick to jump on the original story but will ignore the retraction. MSNBC can correct their mistake today but the damage has already been done - anti-Israel feeling has been increased and along with that anti-Semitism.

Former BBC Chairman condemns BBC coverage on violence in Israel per Conservative Friends of Israel

Lord Grade, the former Chairman of the BBC, has written to the BBC to complain about the BBC's biased reporting of the latest events in Israel. 

'Former Chairman of the BBC, Lord Grade of Yarmouth CBE, has expressed concern about the BBC's coverage of the recent violence in Israel and the West Bank, in a letter to the organisations' Director of News and Current Affairs, James Harding.

In his complaint, Lord Grade said that the BBC coverage was at times misleading and failed to provide a wider context of what is an "undoubtedly complex issue".

Lord Grade criticised the BBC's inability "to fulfil its obligation to viewers" by not showing viewers examples of Palestinian Authority officials praising the attacks and calling for more. The former BBC Chairman underlined that Palestinian incitement, "has played an undeniable part in stoking tension recently and is an important part of the story".

The complaint was directed at a report by Orla Guerin on Sunday October 11th, about the recent wave of attacks across Israel.

Lord Grade criticised the report's apparent promotion of "equivalence between Israeli victims of terrorism and Palestinians who have been killed by Israeli security forces in the act of carrying out terror attacks".

If only there was an independent report into the BBC's reporting of the Israeli / Palestinian conflict that the BBC could use to show that they weren't and aren't biased against Israel. Maybe the BBC could reassure Lord Grade and others by releasing the Balen Report, that must have given the BBC a clean bill of health...

'In 2002, Guerin claimed she had been targeted by Israeli soldiers who, she said, deliberately shot at her during a demonstration in Bethlehem. A year later Israel boycotted the BBC after accusing her of "deep-seated bias" in her reports. Then, in 2006, during the war in Lebanon she was accused of misreporting when she claimed a town near the Israel border had been "wiped out" by Israeli forces. "I haven't seen a single building that isn't damaged in some way," she said.

But Alex Thomson, filing for Channel 4 from the same town, Bint Jbeil, on the same day, presented a different perspective. He reported that the suburbs of the town "are pretty much untouched by the Israeli attack".'

The BBC are sneaky as well as biased

The BBC dash to report faithfully every Palestinian claim that the Israelis are trying to change the status quo at the Temple Mount, a status quo that means that Jews cannot pray at what should be their holiest site but Muslims can stockpile weapons in the Al Aqsa mosque and spew abuse at any Jews that dare to visit the Temple Mount.

I can remember the BBC putting such news on their Middle East news page with great rapidity and often linking to this from the main BBC news page. However when Palestinian Muslims set fire to Joseph's tomb I could find no BBC report: it wasn't shown on that Middle East news page and certainly not on the main news page. Yet if I Google search I find the report here. Could it be possible that the BBC are reporting the story so they can say 'look we reported this, we're not biased' whilst deliberately not promoting the story? Are they actively trying to hide the story so as not to ruin the BBC narrative of 'Israelis evil aggressors, Palestinians good and victims'?

UPDATE: One hour later, I see that the BBC have managed to report the buring of Joseph's Tomb on their Middle East news page.

They end that report thus:

'Seven Israelis have been killed and dozens wounded.

At least 30 Palestinians, including several of the attackers, have been killed in recent violence.'

I think  that the BBC are trying to push the 'disproportionate' narrative again.

The opening still is of just the Muslim site with a tiny Israeli flag fluttering beneath. Could not an overhead shot that gave a better idea of scale not have been used? A shot like the one shown at 0:45?

Both the historical and the naming explanations  are given Muslim first, Jews second and the accompanying graphic has Islam above Judaism. Some might argue that the older of the two religions should be first.

Yolande Knell starts her modern history with what happened after the 6-Day war of 1967. There's no mention of the position prior to 1948 when Jews lived across Jerusalem or 1948-1967 when the eastern part of Jerusalem was occupied by the Jordanians. The only time ever in history that Jerusalem has been split was in that period 1948-1967. When the Jordanians occupied the eastern part of Jerusalem they stopped Jews from worshipping there and destroyed synagogues. Oddly this is not something that the BBC see fit to tell their viewers.

Yolande Knell tells us that Israel occupied East Jerusalem, might not the above context have been useful?

So the evil apartheid state of Israel ceded control of the holiest site in Judaism to a Jordanian Waqf and agreed to prevent Jews from praying at their holiest site. That seems odd for a country characterised by the BBC as unreasonable, aggressive and expansionary.

What naughty Jews praying at a holy site. The Muslims see Jews praying at their holiest site as provocative? Well cry me a f***ing river, I see a Muslim mosque built on top of the site of the Jewish temple as provocative.

Many Palestinians are suspicious... what a load of bullshit, The Muslims have been trying this line since the 1920s, they know that if they claim that the Jooooos are trying to do something against the Al Aqsa then they will get the support of the Muslim world and the anti-Israel (and often anti-Semitic) West too.

Spot the imagery used for the intifada section. An heroic Palestinian youth throwing a bottle (or rock) and then five Israeli soldiers and a Land Rover. The odds are just so unfair. Imagery is important, it sets the scene and that's just what is being done here.

Yolande Knell then says that 'Most of the recent attacks have been carried out by individuals acting alone'. If 'most' have been then which have not and how does Yolande Knell know that most have not been? Has she not seen the videos encouraging such attacks put out by Fatah and Hamas?

Whilst Yolande Knell wonders what the current situation will become a split screen is shown again. On the left religious Jewish men, maybe praying, on the right weeping Muslim women - once again the image is more important than the words and the BBC know that.

Orla Guerin - incompetent or deliberately offensive

The BBC's Orla Guerin presented another biased piece of reporting on the BBC News tonight. 

What was breathtaking was her statement that the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem is sacred to both Muslims and Jews. Is this woman ignorant or being deliberately offensive? 

The Al Aqsa Mosque is not sacred to Jews. Part of the site of the mosque is built over the ruins of the Jewish Temple and so is the holiest site in Judaism. Of course the Israeli government stupidly prevents Jews from worshipping at their holiest site but allows Muslims to a) worship there and b) scream abuse at any Jew who dares to visit the site. Jews are actually prevented by Israeli police from saying any prayers at the holiest site in Judaism but it's Israel that's seen as victimising non Muslims.

I will be complaining to the BBC about this Orla Guerin report, I wonder what crock of shit response I'll get.

On tonight's News At Ten, Orla Guerin presented a report on the situation in Israel. During this report she said that Jerusalem's Al Aqsa mosque was sacred to both Muslims and Jews. This is factually incorect and offensive to Jews.

The Al Aqsa mosque is built on top of the site where the Jewish Temples stood before being destroyed. The site is the holiest site in Judaism but the Al Aqsa mosque itself is not sacred to Jews, it is rather is a symbol of Islamic invasion and dominance over Judaism right in the heart of the Jewish capital.

Jews are not allowed to pray on their holiest site. Israeli police stop them from doing so and Muslim Arab women are paid to spew abuse at Jews who try to visit the site, not enter the mosque just visit the Temple Mount,

Was Orla Guerin's statement the result of ignorance, in which case she should learn about the history of the region before reporting on it again, or was it just symptomatic of the BBC's anti-Israel bias?

Human Relief Foundation considers cutting off aid for the Calais ‘Jungle’ per Daily Mail Online

The Daily Mail yesterday had this report that oddly has still not made it to the BBC's news reporting. Maybe the BBC only cover The Mail's reports when they involve a Conservative Prime Minister and porcine rumours.

'The Bradford-based Human Relief Foundation has been running a project to help the 'refugees' at the makeshift camp and previously claimed they were all 'fleeing war and significant atrocities.'

But a visit by a team led by Kassim Tokan, the HRF deputy chief executive, discovered a totally different picture on the ground, with unwanted clothing and food being 'dumped and burnt' by the migrants.

The organisation had been running a project  to help the 'refugees' at the makeshift camp and previously claimed they were all 'fleeing war and significant atrocities

Instead of vulnerable families fighting for survival he found the camp – dubbed the Jungle – was '95 to 97 per cent' adult men.'

95%+ adult men, well that doesn't match with the BBC's coverage does it. There's a narrative to spread so I doubt that the BBC will go anywhere near this news.

The best Prime Minister we never had?

The eulogies for Denis Healey do slightly grate on me. I remember him as Chancellor of the Exchequer and his performance was as dismal as most Labour Chancellors. I wonder if people are remembering him only by the 'eyebrows' and the Mike Yarwood impression.

In reality Denis Healey had been a member of the Communist Party.  Had imposed high tax rates on 'the rich', not quite until until the pips squeaked. All but bankrupted the country with excessive public sector spending and general ineptitude.  Had to run to the IMF to bail out the Country.

A good question would be why an ex Communist Party member cancelled the BAC TSR2 , the best plane that the RAF never received. And why he cancelled the Royal Navy's new aircraft carrier too. 

Why did Denis Healey diminish the UK's ability to defend itself from any possible Soviet aggression?

I can see why his actions both economic and otherwise might endear him to the anti British BBC but some of us are able to remember what happened, without the benefit of the BBC's attempts at educating us.

As I listen to the BBC interview Conservatives including the Prime Minister, I do wonder why the Conservatives don't reply:

You keep saying that people are unhappy, that the country doesn't support these policies, but less than six months ago the Conservative Party won a General Election with an overall majority. If the Labour Party had cobbled together a coalition you'd be happy with that representing the country, so why not now? Are you biased against the Conservative Party?

Then there are the people that the BBC invite to criticise Conservative announcements. Such as Dr Liz McKenzie from Class War. By all means let her speak but couldn't the BBC point out that she stood in the General Election against the 'evil' Iain Duncan Smith and received 53 votes. The 'evil' Iain Duncan Smith received 20,999 votes. Receiving 53 votes hardly points to being the representative of the majority, does it?

John Whittingdale: BBC to lose power to address claims of political bias per The Guardian

The Guardian, the closest thing there is to a BBC house newspaper, reports that:

'John Whittingdale, the UK culture secretary, has confirmed that the BBC will be stripped of its power to adjudicate on allegations of political bias in its coverage.

Speaking at the Conservative party conference in Manchester, he said the public should have confidence that complaints are examined independently and carefully. He said it must no longer be the case "that if you make a complaint against the BBC, the decision on whether it is justified is taken by the BBC".'

As someone who has had a couple or more complaints of BBC bias dismissed by the BBC Trust, I welcome this step in the right direction. I'm fed-up with being told that the BBC got it about right and that's the end of it. 

Hopefully a properly independent body would be willing to find against the BBC and require the BBC to make an apology that is equally prominent as the original story.

However two things strike me, first that the original bias will have had its effect long before the BBC is found to have been biased and so a stinging financial penalty is needed to ensure that the BBC doesn't just carry on with its biased reporting. I suggest a sliding scale of fines, from 1% of the licence fee upwards, depending upon the seriousness of the bias. These fines to be deducted from the next year's licence fee or paid to the BBC's rivals. That should concentrate the BBC to avoid any bias in their reporting.

The second thing is to define political bias. This has to include tackling the BBC's institutional anti Israel bias that is helping to create the rise in anti Semitism in the UK. Maybe a future complaint to the new body of BBC anti Israel bias could result in the publication of the Balen Report which the BBC has been so desperate to keep secret for so long.

641,000 people moving to the UK last year, that's more than the population of Bristol. In fact that number of people would constitute the 11th largest urban area in the UK.

BBC News revert to type on reporting about Jerusalem

This BBC report on two Israeli Jews murdered by Palestinians http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-34417930 has reverted to the BBC's preferred lie about Jerusalem:

'Tensions have been particularly high in recent weeks over the long-running issue of access to the al-Aqsa mosque compound in East Jerusalem.

Al-Aqsa is one of Islam's holiest sites and is in the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif site also revered by Jews.'

The Temple Mount site is the holiest site in Judaism as the BBC started to acknowledge recently after pressure from me and others. It's odd that they have reverted to their old ways. 

Maybe the BBC could explain to its audience how the holiest site in Judaism not only has a mosque on it but also is somewhere where Jews are banned from worshipping, even in secret.

The BBC is institutionally anti Israel and that shows time and time again.

'Tony Blair's Labour government made a mistake in promoting diesel cars as they are now "killing people", former science minister Lord Drayson has said.'

Nice differentiation of Tony Blair's Labour government from a real Labour government.

'In 2001, the then Chancellor Gordon Brown introduced lower vehicle tax for diesel cars, on the grounds that they were less polluting.'

That these grounds were fallacious and many said so at the time is not relevant.
