An independent Bank of England

It looks as though one of Gordon Brown's proudest boasts may be about to be sunk like most of his others.

"Plans by ministers to wrest key powers from the Bank of England for use during any future crisis in the banking system emerged yesterday amid fresh signs of tensions with the Treasury.

Alistair Darling, the Chancellor, is considering reforms that would allow him to take control of all decisions during an emergency such as the one that triggered the run on Northern Rock......"

The Bank of England was never truly independent and now Gordon wants to take full control of the bank. Only Gordon truly understands what is happening and how it all works. Only Gordon can save us from calamity. Only Gordon knows what to do and how to do it. Only Gordon will keep control as he retreats to a nice quiet bunker to pull on the levers of power, even though those levers will increasingly have no effect in the real world, the world that we inhabit. I suggest that Gordon's advisers watch Downfall so they know what is to come.
