I seem to remember Labour ministers assuring the public that only non-violent offenders will be released from prison "early". Of course even this was somewhat disingenuous as virtually all prisoners are released "early" in that most are eligible for release once they have served half of their original sentence. But even on the Government's own definition of "early" (ie: before they would normally have been), they have mislead us. Government figures show that 5,000 violent criminals including those convicted of serious assault and burglary have been released early and that 492 further crimes have been committed (really committed and detected, the government have no idea how many have been committed without detection) including one murder.
"Tough on crime"! I think not.
