"Everyone who buys a mobile telephone will be forced to register their identity on a national database under government plans to extend massively the powers of state surveillance.Obviously the bunch of control freaks that think they rule us will claim that this is needed to fight terrorism and crime, in fact it is all about control...
Phone buyers would have to present a passport or other official form of identification at the point of purchase. Privacy campaigners fear it marks the latest government move to create a surveillance society.
A compulsory national register for the owners of all 72m mobile phones in Britain would be part of a much bigger database to combat terrorism and crime. Whitehall officials have raised the idea of a register containing the names and addresses of everyone who buys a phone in recent talks with Vodafone and other telephone companies, insiders say."
I presume that everyone realises that mobile phones can be tracked, even if switched off, and that this database would mean that the government would have the location of every mobile phone recorded, how handy for them - of course if you are innocent, you have nothing to hide and so nothing to fear...
Never mind that terrorists might just steal a mobile telephone or bring one in from outside of the UK, have the government even heard of roaming agreements?
Maybe it would be best if we all had a small camera and microphone implanted in our forehead that recorded 24/7 our conversations and the faces of those we met. This data could be uploaded "real-time" into a giant database for our state masters to examine and act upon. Beware such crimes as saying "that Gordon Brown really has no idea has he?", that could result in detention in a re-education camp. Let your eye stray to a woman's legs and Harriet Harman's anti-sexist behaviour police will be paying you a visit.
Hold on I foresee a problem, what if people develop techniques to get around these cameras, such as writing messages in code? What about people who are planning a terrorist atrocity on their own, they could slip through this net. This is a serious flaw and in the interests of fighting terrorism the government will have to implant brain probes in us all to pick up thought crimes - who could disagree? After all, if you are innocent what do you have to hide?
