Raingzieb Ahmed, 33, was also found guilty of being a member of terror group al-Qaeda, following a trial at Manchester Crown Court.
Another man, Habib Ahmed, 29, was convicted of professing to be member.
He was caught with two diaries containing details of top al-Qaeda operatives, described in court as a terrorist's contact book.
The diaries had been given to him by his co-defendant Raingzieb Ahmed, who is no relation.
The prosecution said he was part of a three-man active service cell on an unknown foreign mission.
Among the names and phone numbers in the diaries were the organisation's suspected former number three, Hamza Rabia, the court was told. "
