Why did Eric Joyce resign as PPS?

The Times reports that:
"A defence minister told how he planned to “chase” the head of the Army over his expenses, according to well-placed sources.

Kevan Jones, the Veterans Minister, allegedly spoke of gunning for General Sir Richard Dannatt, then the army chief, who had angered ministers with public campaigns for better equipment for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The overheard conversation was one of the reasons behind Eric Joyce’s decision to resign as parliamentary private secretary at the Ministry of Defence, The Times has learnt."

Meanwhile, The Mail on Sunday reports that:
"A Labour plot to smear the new head of the Army, General Sir David Richards, because of his daughter’s ‘crime’ of working for David Cameron was exposed last night.

The threat to target the General, who took up his new job just nine days ago, was one of the real reasons that Labour MP Eric Joyce resigned as an aide to Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth last week.

Former soldier Mr Joyce has told friends he attended a meeting at the Ministry of Defence where a discussion took place on how to target Sir David’s predecessor, General Sir Richard Dannatt, for criticising the Government’s failure to give enough support to British troops.

And The Mail on Sunday has established that Mr Joyce was also disturbed to hear Labour colleagues discuss Sir David’s 25-year-old daughter, Joanna Richards, who recently became Mr Cameron’s diary secretary.

Well-placed sources say Mr Joyce feared Labour was preparing to deploy more smear tactics against General Richards if he stepped out of line like General Dannatt. "

Lovely people in this Labour government aren't there, smearing and sneering all the while. Not too surprising when you remember who has led and managed the party for so many years: Blair, Brown, Campbell and Mandelson prime amongst them.

  1. I'm sure I read that that disgusting old rogue Lord George Foulkes was planning a campaign of parliamentary questions about General Dannatt's expenses. Foulkes rakes it in from bothe the House of Lords and Holyrood, & defended Speaker Trougher Martin to the hilt. He's a disgrace, like this Labour government as a whole.

  2. Six months later the government has hardly exonerated itself. The uk is still at war with Afganistan and Gordon Brown has failed to convince the electorate that he is the man to lead the uk for the next five years. The Labour party has lost its soul by attacking its own and refusing to come to terms with it own failures. The beneficiary will of course be the Lib Dems and the Conservative Parties.
    from just a goat.
