Today marks 63 years since the creation of the secular Union of India (later Republic of India). Note the contrast with the creation of the Dominion of Pakistan (later Islamic Republic of Pakistan) yesterday. This partition marked the start of one of the largest transfers of population in the history of the world as 7,226,000 Muslims went to Pakistan from India while 7,249,000 Hindus and Sikhs moved to India from Pakistan immediately after partition.
