To commemorate the 1973 Yom Kippur war

From the letters section of the one before the current Private Eye
'Sir,

While discussing the coroner’s inquest into the death of Ashraf Marwan [page 7, Eye 1267], you write “In October 1973, for example, he warned Israel of the imminent Egyptian and Syrian invasions that started the Yom Kippur War’. As I am sure you note now, this is totally inaccurate. Syria and Egypt cannot invade their own lands. They attacked to regain their lands occupied by Israel.

Can you please make the necessary correction.

Thank you.

Hisham al-Qassab'
I think Hisham al-Qassab should learn some history, specifically about the conquest of Jewish land by Muslims pre 20th Century, the creation of Jordan on land promised to a future Jewish state, the expulsion of Jews from Muslim countries post 1948, and the story of the wars of 1948 and 1967.

In the meantime 'well over the fast' to my Jewish readers; being as Yom Kippur commences at sunset tonight. I await the BBC comemorations of the Muslim countries attack on Israel on the holiest day in the Jewish calendar in 1973, but somehow I think that I will wait in vain.

  1. Yes, Melanie Phillips has covered this very well at the Spectator, a couple of days ago.

History is very clear on who occupied which land(s) and under what names/races/nationalities throughout the entire period from the Old testament onward!

  2. The BBC will either ignore it or use it as an excuse to push the Arab line.
I remember watching the war on the TV with my late father, who was even more pro-Jewish than me and knew a lot more about middle east history than I ever will. His comment about the Arab attack "cowardly bastards".
Private Eye is strange in its attitude to the ME. I am not quite sure where it stands except it has been consistently anti-Turkish for as long as I can remember for some reason.
