Another "self-evident" modern truth exploded

The rise of the "counselling culture" has long irritated me. This idea that if anything bad happens to you, then you must discuss it and its effect on you until you have resolved your "issues". I have long thought that this approach just encourages people to wallow in their problems rather than getting on with their lives.

Today I read in The Telegraph that:

"Psychologists in the US used an online survey to test people's responses to the September 11 2001 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.

Those who chose to express their thoughts and feelings were compared with those who did not over a two-year period.

To their surprise, individuals who bottled up their feelings ended up better off. They suffered fewer negative mental and physical health symptoms than people who were willing to talk. "

Maybe rather than appealing for victims of the next disaster to come forward for counselling, the victims could be left to make up their own minds as to what they need. Somehow I doubt this will happen as there is a whole "counselling" industry that needs to keep its staff employed, and as it's mostly taxpayer funded - who really loses!
