Pity the poor BBC they are never 100% who to back in a Labour leadership election, not that there are many of those. This time should they back David Miliband who is after all allegedly Mandelson's choice? Or should they back Ed Balls who was Gordon Brown's protoge and would therefore have been the right choice up until the election defeat? Maybe they should back Ed Miliband who is oh so PC on those critical environmental issues? Alternatively maybe they should they back John McDonnell who is left wing and therefore 'good' but also dared to oppose Gordon Brown in 2007 and is therefore 'bad'? perhaps they should they back Andy Burnham who resigned from Gordon Brown's cabinet and is therefore 'bad' but he could appeal to the Blairite middle classes and so win an election for Labour and is therefore 'good'? How about Diane Abbott who is a woman and black and left wing and is therefore 'good' but is a bit of a loose cannon with consistency issues and therefore 'bad'?
It's a tough decision and so far the BBC are holding back from making it. However one thing is for sure, whoever is elected as Labour leader will be 'the best possible choice' and will be able to rely on the BBC's loyal support right up until the next Labour leader is elected to replace them...
