The source said Israel had told Moscow it knew the ship was secretly carrying a Russian air defence system for Iran.

it still doesn't make sense. Why wouldn't any systems just be shipped across the Caspian Sea? According to the link, Russia and Iran are beginning joint manoeuvers in the Caspian Sea.
There's certainly something fishy going on, but I'm not convinced this is the full story.
