If you want the facts read history Professor Oren's book. Jeremy wasn't there, yet is able to quote Israeli Generals verbatim in the heat of battle. Of course if you believe, as does Jeremy, that Nasser consistent threatening to wipe out Israel since 1948, (apparently, according to Nasser himself, humiliating forced retreat from a position of great strength in 1948), his blockade of Eilat,(Suez was always closed to Israeli ships), his amassing multiple armies on Israel's Border, his joint military agreements with Syria and Jordan, a very nasty 6 months of radio propaganda towards Israel and provocation of sniping and artillery into Israel by all three countries, was nothing more than empty rhetoric. (Probably the Israelis didn't see it that way, you wonder why?). Therefore, in Jeremy's view, this was not a preemptive strike by Israel but a War of Aggression, then this book is for you, for those who want real facts, read Oren.

 

 

If you hate Israel you will love this book

If you hate Israel you will love this book. It makes no pretence of being history, right from the first page. Why Simon and Shuster agreed to publish this re-writing of history is a mystery. Did they even read it, or did they assume it was clean because the author is a BBC correspondent? It tells a fantastic story of a mighty Israel attacking its pathetic Arab neighbours to conquer their territory, and weaves little bits of fact with very imaginative fiction. If you had no knowledge of the truth, it would be easy to believe this propagandist book is factual and, as I said, if you are looking for a justification to support your anti-Zionism this is it. I assume most of those who have reviewed the book favourably here are simply people who hate Israel and therefore love the book because it justifies their hatred, or part of the Muslim supremacist campaign against Israel who have not even read it.

 

 

Typical BBC pro-Palestinian propaganda

Jeremy Bowen isn't known as al-Bowen around the 'net for nothing. This disgraceful book is simply an extended piece of apologia for the Arab cause. To give just two examples, Bowen dismisses Nasser's bloodthirsty threats against Israel as just Arab rhetoric. This you know how, Jeremy? By the fact that they weren't executed?

He also fulminates against Israel's bombing of an anti-aircraft position in a civilian area and hints darkly that this was a war crime. Here he has his case exactly wrong - the war crime, if any, consists in siting the gun battery there in the first place. If someone does so then the other side is quite entitled to attack it. Bowen hates Israel however and so this side of things never gets an airing.

Finally, you will struggle to find any mention of Islamofascist terrorism in this book. Bowen thinks Hamas and their ilk are freedom-fighting, peace loving victims of Israeli oppression.

A book so malignant it verges on being evil.

 

 

 

Profoundly tendentious

Bowen is convinced the Arabs weren't out to destroy Israel, that the Israelis knew they would wipe the floor with their Arab antagonists. This hardly explains the Israeli chief of staff's (Rabin) nervous breakdown, or the then PM's (Ben Gurion) white hot fury with him for what he perceived as an existential danger.

Oren's book is far more extensively sourced from Arab, Hebrew, Russian documents as well as English one - and unlike Bowen evidently strives for precision and balance. The comparison between the two is highly illuminating.

 

 

Rife with anti-israel bias

The book is superficial, derivative and rife with standard anti-Israel prejudice, namely, the portrayal of Israel as the source of the Middle-East conflict and the whitewashing of Arab-Palestinian rejection of Israel's legitimacy and decades of relentless violence against the Jewish state.

 

 

Problems With Credibility

After Michael Oren's excellent history of the same war ("Six Days of War"), this book turned out to be a disappointment. Like so much of the reporting from the region (Bowen was a BBC journalist), it is unscholarly and superficial. One can't help suspecting that Bowen's main motivation might be something other than just an interest in history. Oren's book was highly praised so Bowen, by choosing an almost identical title, may have seen a chance to make a quick buck. But mostly he probably wanted to give his own version of events -- he is famous for his strong anti-Israel bias and his tendentious "reporting" for the BBC. Don't bother with this book; it's not a serious history. For now, Oren's book remains the definitive work on this war.'

 

I could carry on with the one star reviews. 

 

I could also post some favourable reviews to make this a fair and balanced article on Jeremy Bowen's book but if he's not unbiased about Israel why should I be unbiased about him? Also I'm not a BBC employee

The BBC's Jeremy Bowen blocked me from following his Tweets so I was surprised to see the above one on my Twitter Feed.

'Killed', no context, it looks as though Jeremy Bowen hasn't changed whilst I was banned.


There was a part 2 tweet...

Being totally independent Jeremy Bowen then Tweeted the Israeli claims that the Palestinians reject... Didn't he? Oh he didn't, how odd.

I'd complain to the BBC but since the release of the Balen Report we know there's little point.

Maybe Jeremy Bowen could chat it all out with Jeremy Corbyn, John McDonnell and Ken Livingstone - they should have a lot of common ground re Israel.

Is Benjamin Netanyahu solely responsible for relations with Barack Obama, or does Barack Obama bear any responsibility for his anti-Israel policies?

No investigation as to why he's so popular?

No other Israelis quoted after the election, just one opponent of the victor. If the left had won the election would Jeremy Bowen have only reported what a disappointed Netanyahu supporter said? Also is 'demoninator' a faithful reporting of what the Israeli said, an 'innocent' typo or a sly dig by a disappointed 'impartial' BBC journalist?

I have heard people being called racists and Islamophobes for saying that Palestinians don't have the same attitude towards death as most Western people.Of course Palestinian mothers love their children and want them to live as much as we do in the West, they say.

Hamas threatening journalists in Gaza who expose abuse of civilians not that you'd know if you rely upon the BBC or Channel 4 for your news

'(Hamas) has emphatically limited reporters' access to aspects of Hamas operations that would reflect to its detriment. One example of this relates to Gaza's Shifa hospital, the official added. "We know that downstairs there is a Hamas command and control center and that Hamas leaders are hiding there. No reporter is allowed to go anywhere downstairs. They're only allowed to work upstairs to take pictures of casualties, the pictures that Hamas wants them to take."

Shifa has indeed "become a de facto headquarters for Hamas leaders, who can be seen in the hallways and offices," the Washington Post reported on July 15. The Wall Street Journal's Middle East correspondent, Nick Casey, wrote on Twitter that Hamas uses Shifa "as a safe place to see media," but removed the post afterwards.

Last week, a correspondent for the local Ouest France daily newspaper told Libération, another French daily, about how he was interrogated and intimidated by Hamas officials in what appeared to be their office in Shifa.

"A few meters from the emergency room, where the injured from the bombings kept on coming in, in the outpatient ward, [the reporter] was received in 'a small section of the hospital used as an office' by a group of young combatants,'" the article read. "Surprisingly, they were all well-dressed, 'in civilian clothing, with a gun under the shirt, and some had walkie-talkies.'" He was ordered to empty his pockets, to remove his shoes and belt, then was taken to a hospital room that appeared to serve the men as their command office, the reporter recalled'

Quietly, some foreign journalists acknowledge Hamas is using human shields

About those Gaza Health Ministry casualty figures cited by the BBC…

Despite the plethora of BBC reporters currently on the ground in the Gaza Strip, BBC audiences have not been informed that at least four summary executions (http://www.alquds.com/news/article/view/id/514752) of ‘collaborators’ by Hamas have apparently taken place since the beginning of Operation Protective Edge and at least thirteen other people have been arrested.

Likewise, BBC audiences have not been informed of reports of Hamas militiamen attacking and injuring Fatah supporters (https://twitter.com/KhaledAbuToameh/status/490472676817780736) .

Seeing as almost every item of BBC content cites casualty figures provided directly or indirectly by the Hamas-run Ministry of Health in Gaza, perhaps next time Yolande Knell, Lyse Doucet or Paul Adams gives them a call to ask for updates, they could ask whether or not those statistics include people killed and injured by the terror organization whose figures they unquestioningly quote and promote.

And whilst they’re at it, they could also enquire with regard to the results of two separate analyses of casualties in the Gaza Strip (http://www.camera.org/index.asp?x_context=2&x_outlet=118&x_article=2762 and http://www.israellycool.com/2014/07/20/analysis-of-gazans-killed-so-far-in-operation-protective-edge/) which both show that a disproportionate number of the casualties to date are males of combatant age.

After all, BBC audiences have the right to know.

Incidentally after I had disagreed, politely, with Jeremy Bowen's reporting standards regarding the Israel / Palestinian dispute, he blocked me on Twitter. He's a piece of work isn't he.

Lyse Doucet oops

The BBC's Lyse Doucet tweeted this this morning

It struck me that I hadn't noticed Lyse Doucet reporting rockets being fired from Gaza pre the Israeli response, so I tweeted her and she responded..

That sounded a weak excuse, so I responded.

 

In response, Lyse Doucet tried to fob me off, and indicated that the conversation was over. Just like Jeremy Bowen, it would seem Lyse Doucet doesn't like being questioned or having her bias pointed out to her.

So I did some quick research and lo and behold, just as I thought would be the case, I couldn't find a single Lyse Doucet tweet about rockets being fired from Gaza in the month of June 2014. I pointed this out to Lyse Doucet...

 

I haven't received a reply.

Typical BBC 'journalism' and attitude to someone who knows the facts and can be bothered to check her assertions.

Guido Fawkes informs me that the BBC's Middle East Editor, Jeremy Bowen, has been shot in the head by a shotgun but is not seriously injured.

I am eagerly awaiting Jeremy Bowen's report on this incident and seeing how he will turn the blame for it onto Israel.

Who is to blame for the Palestinian refugee problem?

I am often told that Israel caused the Palestinian refugee problem by expelling non-Jews from Israel as they re-formed the Israeli state. This is an obvious lie but it was nice to find this proof today...

Abu Mazen admitted that the Arab armies caused the Palestinian refugee problem in 1976, has nobody told Jeremy Bowen and the rest of the BBC Middle East department? Or does he & they know and just not care?

In March, on his first visit to the Jewish state as president, Barack Obama exhorted Israelis to reach out to their Arab neighbors and see that "sometimes the greatest miracle is recognizing that the world can change."

But consider Egypt, where in 2011 a popular revolt swept away Hosni Mubarak's pharaonic dictatorship only to replace it with a Muslim Brotherhood-led theocracy. Through it all, one element of Egyptian culture has remained constant: its virulent anti-Semitism.

"Khaybar," a serial drama set to air during the holy month of Ramadan (starting on July 8), is Egyptian TV's latest piece of hate-melodrama. It depicts the Prophet Muhammad's conquest, in A.D. 629, of a Jewish community on the Arabian Peninsula.

 "Khaybar, oh Jews!" is an oft-heard chant at Arab anti-Israel rallies. But just in case there was any doubt about the intended political message, the show's screenwriter, Yousry El Gendy, has gone on the record with the online news outlet Alyoum Alsabea to declare: "This drama will focus on the Jewish community and will show their traits, ideas and their maliciousness. Also, it will show the enmity between Arabs and Jews since the time of Moses." Ahmed Maher, a popular actor playing one of the Jewish villains, told the Al-Balad newspaper that "Khaybar" sets out to depict Jews as "the ugliest slice of humans."

"The show will be on when most Egyptian families are staying at home for Ramadan doing nothing but watching TV," Mina Rezkalla, a U.S.-based Egyptian activist told me. "The goal is completely outward anti-Semitism."

Further to this post, I am still awaiting a report on what was decided at the BBC Trust meeting of 11 April. How long should this process take?

It seems I was correct in my prediction, as two days later there's not a word of correction discernible on the BBC news website. Perhaps Jeremy Bowen, Jon Donisson, Wyre Davis and the rest of the BBC's Middle East news department could explain. Alternatively they could just release the desperately hidden Balen Report as I am sure that would assist in confirming that the BBC is institutionally biased against Israel and in favour of the Palestinians.

The BBC respond

The BBC's Leanne Buckle has responded to my most recent email but has ignored my pointing out of an error of fact

'Dear Audience Member

Thank you for your further email to the Trust of 4 March 2013.  Your response will be considered as a challenge to my decision that Trustees should not hear this appeal.  Therefore, as was set out in my letter, your original appeal to the Trust, my response to it and your challenge letter will be put before Trustees at their April meeting.  Trustees will have access to your previous correspondence with the BBC.  If the Trustees agree with my decision not to hear your appeal, the case will close.  If they disagree with me, we will advise you of their decision and assign an independent editorial adviser to write a background note on the case – you would have sight of this and an opportunity to comment on it before it was put before Trustees – and we would also keep you abreast of the amended timeframe.'

Did you spot that marvellous line 'If the Trustees agree with my decision not to hear your appeal, the case will close.'. I wonder if that will be the case?

I have two questions at this time:
1. Do you / the BBC accept that the BBC's last response relied largely upon a factually incorrect statement - regarding the date of Rosh Hashonah?
2. What date is the April meeting of the Trustees?
