What if Barack Hussein Obama isn't inept, what if he knows exactly what he's doing?

What if Barack Hussein Obama isn't inept, what if he knows exactly what he's doing?

Do you remember the so called 'Obama open mic slip':
"After my election I have more flexibility"
Maybe Barack Hussein Obama's seeming incompetence with regards to foreign policy, an example being the way Russia has been given all but a free hand in Syria, isn't all it seems...

Watch this and wonder...

Putin is right, this once

One line in this Mail article struck me as true and rather worrying.
'Putin believes the West is finished: overstretched, decadent and discredited.'
Hard to argue with?

Why does Vladimir Putin think he can get away with invading the Ukraine?

When President Obama was taking part in a global nuclear security summit in South Korea, he was caught on tape asking for Russian President Dmitry Medvedev for "space." "This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility," Obama implored. Obama assured the departing Russian President he will have the "flexibility" required to deal with missile defense issues after the 2012 presidential election. What other issues might Obama be more flexible over?

An unfortunate turn of phrase

From CNN news Flash email
'Russian President Vladimir Putin says in a friendly meeting with President Barack Obama they talked about Syria, but "we stuck to our guns."'
Hmm Mr Putin...

'Assad Unable To Convince Putin That He Used Chemical Weapons On Syrians' - I think this is satire but I'm not sure

The Onion reports
'MOSCOW—Despite Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s flat-out admission to the Russian leader that he was responsible for an August 21 chemical weapons attack on a suburban Damascus neighborhood, Russian president Vladimir Putin confirmed Wednesday that al-Assad has yet to provide a convincing case that he carried out the assault. “Given the information I’ve seen at this point, President Assad failed to show me clear, substantiated evidence that he used chemical weapons against the Syrian people, regardless of how many times he says ‘I, Bashar al-Assad, President of Syria, am the one who did this’ while showing me videos of people dying of Sarin poisoning,” said Putin, adding that he remains extremely skeptical despite phone conversations in which a reportedly frustrated Assad repeats, over and over again, the step-by-step account of how he authorized the use of nerve gas to kill over 1,400 people. “We need to know all the facts before we act. I don’t care how many autopsy reports, laboratory tests, or pictures of Assad pressing a button labeled ‘chemical weapons launcher’ he sends me—before we have conclusive proof that he and not the opposition forces did this, we cannot say that Syria is in violation of international law.” Putin went on to confirm that until Assad proves beyond a doubt that he carried out the alleged attack, Russia will continue delivering components of a surface-to-air missile defense system to the Syrian government.'
The best satire is close to the truth!

Free speech Russian style

The Telegraph report that:
'Russian police seized 100,000 copies of a book critical of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin that activists planned to hand out at the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum.'
Ah free speech, overrated? The line that caught my eye was: 'The reasons for the seizure "are not very clear"' Oh I think the reasons are crystal clear.

The eighty-third weekly "No shit, Sherlock" award

This week's award goes to Eurasianet for their headline 'Putin, not Medvedev, Remains Master of Russian Foreign Policy'.

Really? "No shit, Sherlock."

Here come the blackouts

The Times report that:
"THE threat of winter gas cuts loomed over Europe yesterday as Russia and Ukraine failed to resolve a dispute that led Moscow to cut off gas supplies to its neighbour last week.

Despite assurances from the two countries that supplies to Europe would not be affected, three European Union states reported an immediate drop in pipeline pressure.

Poland, Hungary and Romania, which rely heavily on Russian gas delivered through pipelines that cross Ukraine, said that less gas than expected was being delivered.

Romania’s pipeline operator said supplies had fallen by 30-40%. And a spokesman for Hungary’s main energy company said: “Pressure started to decline on Friday. It’s declining continuously.”

The news prompted the EU, which gets a fifth of its gas from Russia via Ukraine, to summon a crisis meeting in Brussels tomorrow and demand that transit and supply contracts be honoured."

Have you bought your generator yet? Prices are bound to rise soon...

Gas shortages on the way

Vladimir Putin is reported to have given Ukraine until midnight tonight tonight to pay the £1.5 million outstanding gas bill or he will order the shutting down of gas supplies to Ukraine. Bear in mind that 25 per cent of the EU's supplies come from the Ukraine, so bye bye gas means higher prices and probable shortages.

Oh those Russians (update)

A visitor to my blog, crushed, commented on my earlier post that
"To be fair though, if anyone can claim the Arctic, it is Russia.

Russia DOES pretty much encircle the Arctic..."

I think the map above shows that Canada, Denmark (via Greenland) and the USA have pretty good claims to part of the Arctic.

Oh those Russians

Putin and his puppet president, Dmitry Medvedev, are at it again. This time they want to unilaterally claim part of the Arctic, stepping up the race for the disputed energy-rich region.

Security of energy supply is going to be ever more important over the coming years and Russia is trying to get to the position where they have the West "over a barrel".

The power of Putin

I see that whilst President Putin will step down as president on May 6 in favour of his puppet (is that too strong a word?) and President-elect Medvedev. He has also accepted another position, Chairman of United Russia, the official party in the Russian Duma. This means that Putin will control the Duma as well as deal with the day to day affairs of government, leaving Medvedev to focus on foreign affairs, if he is allowed to.
