The 'Big Society' in practice

It would seem that Barnet Council (in North London) has jumped aboard the 'Big Society' idea with its PledgeBank:
'Barnet Pledgebank can be used to gather together people to get projects done. These can be tasks such as clearing snow and ice from pavements in the street, painting over graffiti or setting up computer classes in your area.
The website is based on the simple principle that the person making the online pledge will work to make it happen “but only if” a number of other people commit too.
Pledges don't have to be started by the council — organisations, schools, community and volunteer groups can all get involved. Submit your pledge ideas.
PledgeBank is designed to help residents passionate about doing their bit for the community. By working together, we can offer services that are popular and worthwhile.'
A very good idea and here are a few examples that caught my eye:
'HendonIT
Barnet Council will provide 6 computers with internet access and a training room at Hendon Library but only if 2 local residents will volunteer to provide an hour's I.T. training each week.

  • KingEdwardLitter
I, S. Laws, will pick up litter in my road (King Edward Road EN5) once a month but only if 3 other people will do the same. That way it would be done once a week.

  • So it looks as though whilst the idea is gaining ground, volunteers a re a little thin on the ground. Maybe more publicity is needed...
