Open Labour Cabinet dissent

The Financial Times are today reporting that "Gerry Sutcliffe, minister for licensing, has given a jaw-dropping interview openly opposing Alistair Darling’s Budget. He wants the chancellor to “change his mind” about the alcohol duty increase. Yes, “change his mind”.

We cannot think of the last time a minister, indeed an experienced minister, so brazenly opposed a central Budget measure. This is an extraordinary breach of discipline. It is bound to lead to a deluge of negative commentary on the state of the Brown government. What was he thinking?"

You can read extracts from Gerry Sutcliffe's interview on the FT link above.

I cannot imagine a Minister briefing this way against a Gordon Brown policy when he was Chancellor of the Exchequer, I wonder what action Alistair Darling will take...

It is so excruciating watching Brown react to these situation. His government is in freefall, hence why he can't be firing people for fear of making him seem even less in control - but he is surrounded by idiots, some of whom really need to be fired.
