"never was charm more offensive"

Leo McKinstry in the Daily Express has a leader piece entitled " DOES ANYONE ACTUALLY BELIEVE A WORD THIS MAN SAYS ANY MORE?" (sorry but the Express does like SHOUTING). Here is an extract:

"Gordon Brown embarked on a so-called “charm offensive” towards the media last week.

And never was charm more offensive.

With a manic grin fixed on his face and meaningless slogans pouring from his mouth, he achieved the remarkable feat of being both tedious and disturbing as he toured the studios.

Brown’s abject performance only emphasised his unfitness for the high office. Like a malfunctioning robot, he kept repeating the same formulaic statements about “long-term decisions” and “guiding the economy” through tough times. But his words had no resonance because they were utterly devoid of meaning. They were nothing more than hollow verbiage designed to deceive.

As Labour’s dire ratings show, voters are not listening to Brown any more. Over the past year they have learnt to recognise that there is no connection between the PM’s words and his actions."

Do go and read the rest but here are some key phrases to whet your appetite:

"His entire premiership has become an exercise in brazen dishonesty."

"His office is obsessed with short-term headlines."

"Every step he takes is based on crude political calculations and the narrow tribal interests of Labour."

"What makes Brown’s deceit all the more repulsive is his pose as a champion of virtue."

"It is hard to stomach this from a man without a shred of integrity. Devoid of purpose, he has shown himself to be a serial coward and a dangerous charlatan."
