Foot and Mouth disease
The last major outbreak of foot and mouth disease in 2001 saw this Labour Government at its most inept. They managed to mishandle practically every aspect of the outbreak especially by refusing to allow vaccinations of livestock and culminating in the killing of many thousands of uninfected animals and their mass burial. At least Gordon can come back from a "normal family holiday" to get back in the saddle in Downing Street and take control of the outbreak. I wonder if Gordon will make as much of a mess of dealing with foot and mouth as Tony did. I also wonder if Gordon Brown will let Hilary Benn (in charge at DEFRA) make any decisions or does all power now reside at Number 10?

It would surely be impossible for Gordon to make as much of a mess as Tony did!
There is no excuse for DEFRA to make a mess this time. The animal passport scheme means they should have all the information they need to track down the source of the infection and to trace animals at risk. If they fail to nip it in the bud heads should roll.
