Ever since I noticed that a cash machine in a London supermarket showed instructions in English and Welsh I have been on the lookout for ridiculous translations and now we have the King of such items. It is widely reported that Swansea Council was looking to halt heavy goods vehicles using a road near an Asda store in the Morriston area and as all official road signs in Wales are bilingual, the local authority e-mailed its in-house translation service for the Welsh version of: "No entry for heavy goods vehicles. Residential site only". Unfortunately the "service" was out and so they just received the out of office message "I am not in the office at the moment. Please send any work to be translated". As nobody in the office spoke Welsh, like the majority of the population of Wales, they assumed this was the correct translation of the wordin they sent and put it on the sign.
Bilingual signs in Wales are a waste of time and a waste of money. The fact that nobody at Swansea Council thought to check the wording or could even translate a few words shows how little Welsh is spoken in South Wales.
