I wonder if they could be Islamists, could jihad be a motive?
Earlier this year an Afghan immigrant, Najibullah Zazi, and an associate, Zarein Ahmedzay, both pleaded guilty in connection with the attempt.

"No motive has been identified"
The BBC's reporting of the failed terrorist attack on Times Square is the usual mix of misinformation and missing facts. Neither this report or this one manage to use the word terrorist or terrorism, except once. I am not sure why it is so hard to ascribe a motive, let's see what the BBC carefully place right at the end of each piece, so as to be able to say 'we mentioned it' but ensure that a large proportion of readers never get that far in the articles and so have their minds sullied by facts:
