MP caught telling lies and the BBC seem unshocked

The BBC report that Sinn Fein MP Martin McGuinness issued a statement in 2002 saying that "I have never met Father Chesney, nor do I have any knowledge of him other than from media reports." Today we learn that contrary to that statement Martin McGuinness did meet with Father Chesney (the bombing priest) prior to his death in 1980.

Now Martin McGuinness states that he never discussed the Claudy bombings with Father Chesney, just his support for a united Ireland. Why should we believe this version of Martin McGuinness's story when he apparently lied to us before? Will the BBC ask Martin McGuinness why he had previously lied to us? Will the BBC ask the reasonable question; what else has Martin McGuinness lied about before? Why do the BBC headline this story 'MP met Claudy bomb suspect priest', with no mention of name or party; would they have done the same with a Conservative MP?
