“perhaps the stupidest statement made by any administration in U.S. international history.”

The words of former US Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton. Whose words was John Bolton describing thus? Those of US Director of National Intelligence James Clapper who gave testimony on Thursday before a House Intelligence Committee hearing, where he described the Muslim Brotherhood Islamist group as a peaceful, "largely secular" organisation that "eschewed violence.".

"The term 'Muslim Brotherhood' … is an umbrella term for a variety of movements, in the case of Egypt, a very heterogeneous group, largely secular, which has eschewed violence and has decried Al Qaeda as a perversion of Islam… there is no overarching agenda, particularly in the pursuit of violence…"

So is James Clapper correct? Very simply, No he is not. The Muslim Brotherhood is not a benign secular organisation. It is an organisation committed to jihad in the cause of ever wider Islamist rule. It was behind the creation of Hamas, involved in the Islamist radicalization of Palestinians. The Muslim Brotherhood openly declares that the Koran is its law and jihad is its way. The Muslim Brotherhood's offshoot Hamas was created for the specific purpose of destroying Israel; the goal that is the main aim of its Charter. The Muslim Brotherhood is dedicated to the establishment of Islamic society and ultimately a global caliphate. The Muslim Brotherhood’s 'Supreme Guide' Muhammad Badi said it was his hope and plan to raise "a jihadi generation that pursues death, just as the enemies pursue life". It was a senior member of the Muslim Brotherhood, Kamal al-Halbavi, who told the BBC the other day that he hoped Egypt soon would have a government "like the Iranian government, and a good president like Mr. Ahmadinejad."

So we have an organisation that has as its creed 'God is our objective; the Koran is our law; the Prophet is our leader; jihad is our way; and death for the sake of Allah is the highest of our aspirations.' and the Director of National Intelligence says that they are largely secular; how could anyone believe that?
Mohammad-Javad Larijani, secretary-general of the Iranian High Council for Human Rights (and brother of Iranian parliament speaker, Ali Larijani), struck an almost jubilant tone: “In my opinion, the Islamic Republic of Iran should see these events without exception in a positive light,” he said.

The BBC and other news organisations feel able to report the US Intelligence chief's assertions as it means that they can continue to cheerlead for the revolution in Egypt. This will not be an Islamist revolution they say and even if the Muslim Brotherhood to gain power they are 'largely secular'. The trouble is that the 2010 Pew poll in Egypt discovered that there was nearly unanimous (95%) support for a large role for Islam in politics as well as 75% approval for the savage punishments stipulated in shariah such as death by stoning for adulterers, whippings and amputation for theft and other crimes, and of course the mandatory death penalty for apostasy from Islam.

I think John Bolton may be right, James Clapper might have made the 'stupidist statement' of any administration in US history. But here in the UK BBC 'expert journlists' make just as stupid comments on a daily basis.
