In all the coverage regarding the allegations that Scotland Yard is alleged to have bugged meetings between Sadiq Khan, a Government whip, and a terrorist suspect currently being held in prison, I have yet to see anyone point out that Sadiq Khan was not the person being bugged, if anyone was being bugged it was the terrorist suspect. Sadiq Khan was not being bugged in his role as MP, it was a terrorist suspect that was being bugged.
Sadiq Khan is a prominent Muslim figure charged with reaching out to the Muslim community who was previously a civil-rights lawyer. The MP is the former chairman of the human-rights group Liberty and a legal adviser to the Muslim Council of Britain.
Of course Labour government incompetence had to appear in this story and so it does. David Davis the shadow Shadow Secretary sent a letter to Gordon Brown on 11 December raising the question of a constituent being bugged, no reply was received and now "a spokesman for Mr Brown insisted he was unaware of it. Downing Street said they could not find any evidence it had been received."
I await Jack Straw's mealy mouthed statement today with interest. Remember that when Jack Straw speaks you have to very carefully consider what he is not saying as well as what he is saying - he is one of the trickiest of this most tricky Labour government.
