Immigration - a reminder

Whilst researching the previous article on immigration figures, I came across this news story that I had quite forgotten about. It concerns the story that "Tony Blair personally authorised the relaxation of immigration controls for Romanians in a deal with their prime minister, Adrian Nastase." Read the rest of the story and just feel the sleaze - "The pact, which was finalised at the EU summit in Rome last October, entailed the lifting of visa requirements this spring as a reward for a decrease in the number of asylum applicants from Romania. This helped the Government to meet a key pledge made by Mr Blair. The disclosure of Mr Blair's deal to allow unrestricted entry for Romanians, which received no publicity in Britain, provoked uproar last night. David Davis, the shadow home secretary, said: "Tony Blair was deeply involved in attempts to manipulate the figures for asylum seekers coming into this country rather than trying to resolve the problem properly." It is/was all about manipulating the figures to make the PM look good not about the UK interest.
