Democratic deficit

I see that:

"a new ICM poll of 1000 voters in the UK... on what would happen if there were a referendum in the UK. It would be a two-to-one no vote.

"If a referendum were being held in Britain, would you vote for or against the new Lisbon Treaty?"

51 No
28 Yes
20 Don't know"

So Gordon Brown is unlikely to hold a referendum, what price democracy in the UK?

Meanwhile on Newsnight Margaret Walstrom seems to refuse to believe it was at an end. Denis McShane is as unimpressive as ever, sound reasonable but you know that when he says "one small country can block Europe..." he would love the EU to just go ahead. Nigel Farage speaks more sense on democracy than most politicians and understands the gap between what voters want and what the EU political class demand.
