I mentioned to Mrs NotaSheep this morning that Blackpool's match with Manchester United had been cancelled due to the weather. This is unusual I said as top teams have under pitch heating but Blackpool are newly promoted so maybe they don't. Hmmm relied Mrs NotaSheep, I don't believe you "if they have under-pitch heating how come we don't see steam rising from the pitch on a hot day?"
Can anyone help me out here?

The simple answer is that they only heat the pitch when it is frozen.
teh complex answer is that water has a latent heat of fusion of 334 Kj/kg and a latent heat of vapourisation of 2260 KJ/kg (at 100°C), so it takes a lot less energy to melt ice than it does to boil water.
