"Gordon Brown will announce plans to examine a new Westminster voting system, the BBC understands.I am not sure how a new electoral system will solve the expenses problem but then this is not about solving anything, it's about trying to save Gordon Brown and the Labour party from electoral meltdown this year or next.
Mr Brown will make a statement to MPs on Wednesday about his reform plans in the wake of the expenses scandal.
Ministers have discussed an alternative vote system to choose MPs to replace the first past the post method, BBC political editor Nick Robinson said. "
Gordon Brown's Labour government looks like it will try and change the elctoral system and elect John Bercow to the post of Speaker in order to queer David Cameron's pitch as much as possible; can they be stopped.

Well there's a surprise - taking a leaf out of the EU's book (might former EU commissioner Mandelson have a hand in all this?) and treating the whole affair as a beneficial crisis. Any reaction will take the opportunity to improve government's (and indeed the political class') power over parliament and to weaken any electoral controls.
