Or is the plan really to sow dissent and violence so that their newly armed police can take their revenge and then have an excuse to postpone the general election.

I think the answer is more straight forward. In their liberal outrage, the panel, chairman and large parts of the audience didn't give Griffin enough rope to hang himself.
What came over to the "non-political" viewer was bullying of the man they would have been interested to hear.
The man is clearly a buffoon but he's now able to attract some measure of public sympathy. To that extent the "expose his arguments to examination" idea backfired badly.
