'... the PA has built just one sewage plant over the past 15 years, despite a $500 million international donor fund available to them to build more. There are plans for building purification plants in several major Palestinian towns such as Hebron, Bethlehem and Nablus, paid for by donor countries, but the Palestinians have decided that they don’t want to build in the Oslo defined Areas A and B under their control, but only in Area C (which is under full Israeli military, and administrative control). Israel has stringent regulations for these and similar projects in other parts of Israel which the Palestinians have no interest in complying with ( and wouldn't have to in areas A & B) so they have built none of these plants. BBC News - UK storms: Two die as fierce storms continue

IRA victims use Twitter to hijack Sinn Fein conference - Latest - Belfast Newsletter
Sheer genius, but do Sinn Fein members have conscience over what IRA did?
' Sinn Fein members attending their annual party conference in Wexford at the weekend were reminded of the unresolved issues facing them as hundreds of posts about IRA atrocities were made online by victims and their relatives.A number of victims took to social networking site Twitter to state the names of their loved ones and the dates of various IRA murders and bombings, using a hashtag that had been created by the party specifically for the conference.'

'Truly, AGW is a magical theory that explains absolutely everything – including diametrically contradictory phenomena, lack of logic and absence of evidence – whenever people observe profoundly, ‘Something funny’s happening to the weather’.I have another theory to explain the current deluge. US easing immigration rule for terrorist support - Yahoo News
Barack Obama and the war on terrorism... He's not really on our side...
' The Department of Homeland Security and the State Department now say that people considered to have provided "limited material support" to terrorists or terrorist groups are no longer automatically barred from the United States.
A post-Sept. 11 provision in immigrant law, known as terrorism related inadmissibility grounds, had affected anyone considered to have given support. With little exception, the provision has been applied rigidly to those trying to enter the U.S. and those already here but wanting to change their immigration status.'

A fascinating piece that deserves readership if only as a counter to the Obama worshipping media...
'While the Iranian warships are certainly no match for our navy, it is important to understand that we are seeing a geopolitical game of 3-D chess play out before us. Like chess, moves are calculated far in advance and often, moves are made for purposes other than direct confrontation. Sometimes, moves are made to spread out the other player’s pieces. Make no mistake, the Iranian ships are pieces on this board and under Putin’s control.'

BBC News - Prince William goes hunting a day before wildlife plea
The BBC's Republican sympathies are on display with the lead in to this article...
'Prince on hunt before wildlife pleaPrince William has gone hunting deer and wild boar in Spain - only a day before he was due to make a public plea to end the illegal wildlife trade.'
The article is here http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-26105706
That lead in suggests to the casual reader that Prince William might have done something illegal by going hunting when he hadn't. The BBC do state this in the actual article but the seed has been planted.
Hunting is not illegal, however much the BBC might wish it was.

Definition of irony - A Friday night Rule 5 lipstick lesbian post
I hear that one of the bands chosen to open the Winter Olympics in Sochi on February 7 may be t.A.T.u.
Back in 2003 tATu and especially the video for their single 'All The Things She Said' were accused of promoting homosexuality among teenagers. This would seem to be somewhat contrary to Vladimir Putin's stance on homosexuality.
Actually it seems that neither of the singers in t.A.T.u, Lena Katina (the red-head) or Yulia Volkova (the brunette), were in fact lesbians and that the video was just to garner them some attention, a tactic that really worked.
Just in case you are too young to remember t.A.T.u's All The Things She Said, and the track did come out as long ago as 2003, here it is in all its lipstick lesbian glory.

Shhh, the BC protecting their Palestinian terrorist heroes from scrutiny
You know the self-righteous fury that the BBC display when an Israeli politician is caught doing something wrong. Remember the headlines when the Israeli President Moshe Katsav was convicted of rape*. The BBC seem to be less interested when a Palestinian politician does something wrong.
Yes, President Mahmoud Abbas has just started the 10th year of his 4-year term of office, but I have seen no mention of this affront to democracy on the BBC.
*The Moshe Katsav case was covered in detail by the BBC but two aspects were not mentioned, first that Moshe Katsav was an immigrant from Iran, his family leaving Iran in 1951 and living in a tented refugee camp in Israel for a few years, the camp being turned into a new city thereafter.
The second was that the Presiding Judge, George Karra, at the President of Israel's trial was not a Jew but a Christian Palestinian resident of Jaffa.
The BBC could not report the first story because it would illustrate the difference between how Israel treated Jewish refugees post 1948 and how the Palestinians and surrounding Muslim states treated Palestinian refugees over the same period.
The BBC could not report the second story as that would go against their depiction of Israel as an 'apartheid state' run by Jews with Muslims and Christians as second class citizens.

A very perceptive tweet from Michael Crick
Michael Crick (@MichaelLCrick) tweeted at 2:20 PM on Sat, Jan 25, 2014:
On 1 Dec Balls said budget surplus goal by 2020 depended on economy; now it's a binding pledge. Has economy improved that much in 8 weeks?
I look forward to the BBC asking Ed Balls this very question... Ha F***ing ha!Not a chance of the pro-Labour BBC doing any such thing.
Oh that's priceless, who on Earth would believe that of Ed Balls?
It seems that Ed Balls has pledged Labour to
balance the UK's books and do away with the budget surplus in the next
Parliament if it wins the 2015 election. The Shadow chancellor Ed Balls said Labour would pass a law to ensure it adheres to "tough" and binding fiscal rules. These rules would include eliminating the deficit and reducing debt as a share of GDP between 2015 and 2020.
Doe anyone seriously believe that Ed Balls is capable of adhering to such a policy? Ed Balls, the great deficit creator. Ed Balls, the deficit denier. Ed Balls, the man who did more to destroy the British economy than anyone in the last Labour government (other than Gordon Brown) of course.
In any sane society Ed Balls' promise to balance the UK's books would be greeted with hysterical laughter and total derision. However I'm sure the BBC will treat Ed Balls' pronouncements as gospel and question him ever so gently.

Freedom in the Middle East and North Africa
Freedom House has just published its 2014 report and here's the freedom figures for the Middle East and North Africa from that report, first for 2010 - 2014 and then just for 2014
In case you are wondering, the Palestinians are not forgotten, the Gaza Strip and 'West Bank' appear under a list of territories, here's their 2014 ranking for comparison...
In the above tables, "PR" stands for "Political Rights," "CL" stands for "Civil Liberties," and "Status" is the Freedom Status.
Political Rights and Civil Liberties are measured on a one-to-seven scale, with one representing the highest degree of Freedom and seven the lowest.
“F,” “PF,” and “NF,” respectively, stand for “Free,” “Partly Free,” and “Not Free.”
The lower the number the freer the country. Can you spot the only country that is FREE? That would be Israel. Of the Muslim majority countries that surround and mostly hate Israel, only five are even classified as Partially Free - Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia. The rest are classified as Not Free.
How peculiar that so many people spend so much time and energy denigrating the name and record of Israel and calling it an apartheid state, when it is by far the freeest country to live in the area in which it is situated.

If they are that ignorant then they shouldn't be allowed a vote
From the BBC report on the Lords blocking the possibility of a EU Referendum following the next general Election comes this passage:
'As it stands, the bill states that voters should be asked: "Do you think that the UK should be a member of the EU?"If people aren't aware that the UK is already a member of the EU then they shouldn't have a vote on anything.
...
The Electoral Commission has already said the existing question needs further thought, suggesting that some people are not aware that the UK is already a member and might not understand the premise as a result.'

They deliberately chose the latter…they have distorted the scientific message into an alarmist message… [bold added; click here for the full, unedited version]'These are the words of one of the world's most distinguished physicists, Pierre Darriulat. For nearly 50 years, his professional life has been devoted to particle physics, nuclear physics, condensed matter physics, and astrophysics. For seven years, he was Director of Research at CERN – one of the world’s largest, most famous, and respected laboratories.
The biography included with his submission tells us that Darriulat was spokesperson for
one of the two experiments that simultaneously discovered the weak bosons and gave evidence for quarks and gluons being produced in the form of hadronic jets.
This is bracing, no-nonsense talk from someone well equipped to understand what’s going on. In Darriulat’s opinion, when scientists write IPCC summaries not only are they are engaging in “a highly subjective exercise,” they’re blatantly “ignoring basic scientific practices.” Not mincing words, he declares that “Such behaviour is unacceptable.”
In his opinion, the conclusions presented in the IPCC’s recent Summary are “far from robust.” He thinks the IPCC “should consider it a duty to answer scientifically” a number of concerns that have been raised by its critics, but says the new IPCC report fails to do so. Instead, he says, it sometimes appears to be “eluding rather than facing embarrassing questions.”
Darriulat’s submission is worth reading in full (online here, PDF here). Near the end, he directly addresses questions posed by the committee’s Terms of Reference.
Keeping in mind Gore’s claim that nothing more complicated than high school physics is involved, here’s what an actual physics virtuoso thinks:
Committee: Has [the IPCC's latest report] sufficiently explained the reasons behind the widely reported hiatus in the global surface temperature record?
Darriulat: Of course not, how could it? One can only suggest hypotheses. The coming decade should help us with understanding much better what is most relevant.

When a person's religion is important and when it's not - according to the BBC re Nicolas Anelka

Proud but not that proud
Back in October the BBC posted this interview with Mo Farah who explained how he 'had ;learnt everything from the UK', following Jack Wilshere's comments.
Oddly the BBC have been less than interested in the news that:
I am attacking the BBC however. I remember the headlines when British Formula 1 drivers relocate to Monaco, with all the insinuations of tax avoidance and lack of loyalty. But when it's a BBC hero, a black hero, an immigrant hero, someone the BBC used as the prrof that racists wrong about all immigrants, not a word.
Oddly the BBC have been less than interested in the news that:
'Britain’s Olympic champion Mo Farah plans to move to the USA as an expat tax exile.I'm not attacking Mo Farah for this decision, it's his life, his money, his moral compass. When Mo Farah won his Olympic & World gold medals I was cheering him on.
According to his management, Farah, the reigning Olympic 5,000 and 10,000 metre gold medal holder lives in Portland, Oregon.
...
Farah is a top rate taxpayer earning £100,000 a year or more and paying his tax at a rate of 45%.
Farah, aged 30 years old, was born in Somalia, but moved with his family to the UK when he was eight.
He is reckoned as one of the world’s richest athletes behind sprint champion Usain Bolt.
...
Tax rates are a major issue for foreign footballers sought after by Premier League clubs. Top players on multi-million pound salaries can earn more and pay less tax in other countries, putting British teams at a disadvantage when competing for the best talent.
Tax is not only an issue for sportsmen, but also entertainers who often commute into the UK for tours and events.
The issue is nothing new – the tradition dates back to the 1950s and 1960s when tax triggered the ‘brain drain’ to the USA and other nations from the UK.'

Another instance of BBC anti-Conservative attitudes
The Telegraph reports that:
Ask yourself what the chances are that the is a similar board showing Labour scandals? Nil?
The BBC's response as reported by the BBC:
'The BBC is facing fresh allegations of bias in favour of the Labour Party after it emerged that journalists have pinned a series of anti-Tory tabloid newspaper headlines to the walls of its Westminster studios.
On one notice board a “stop the cuts” poster has been pasted up next to headlines including “Gun nut Tory MP: I tried to shoot a cat” and “Ewe are joking: Tory MP was not wearing trousers when stopped by police”.
Rob Wilson, a Conservative MP and an aide to George Osborne, called on the BBC to remove the articles immediately and launch an investigation into who was responsible for displaying them.
Anyone who listens, watches or reads the BBC's output cannot fail to notice the blatant anti-Conservative bias that pervades their broadcasting. In a letter to Lord Hall, the director general of the BBC, Mr Wilson also demanded an inquiry into a series of incidents over the past year which he said displayed the left-wing bias of the broadcaster’s political coverage.'
Ask yourself what the chances are that the is a similar board showing Labour scandals? Nil?
The BBC's response as reported by the BBC:
'A BBC spokesman said: “We don't immediately know what staff notice board Mr Wilson is referring to, but whatever it is; it won't have anything to do with the BBC's output.”'Bullshit...
Hidden at the end
Hidden away right at the end of the report is this somewhat important passage:this BBC article entitled 'Iran nuclear: Curbs on uranium enrichment begin' starts 'Iran has begun curbing uranium enrichment under a deal which will also see international sanctions eased, the UN nuclear watchdog (IAEA) says.
Earlier, centrifuges used for enrichment were disconnected at the Nantaz plant, Iranian TV reported.'
'Sounding a note of caution, former IAEA deputy director Olli Heinonen said that if Iran decided to renege on the deal, it would only need two to three weeks to produce enough highly enriched uranium for a nuclear weapon.'As it's just Israel that needs to worry about Iran's nuclear arsenal, why should the BBC worry?

When Nelson Mandela died, there was no similar mention of Nelson Mandela's failure to prevent his wife and her associates from 'necklacing' other South Africans.

So when I heard that Lord McAlpine had died, I wondered how they could insult the memory of a Thatcherite. I didn't have to look far to read: 'In recent years, Lord McAlpine was wrongly implicated in a child abuse scandal, when the allegations were the subject of a BBC Newsnight investigation.
The programme aired allegations that a Thatcher-era politician was linked to boys that were sexually abused while in the care of a children's home in Wales in the 1970s and 1980s, though it did not name Lord McAlpine.Yes the above says he was wrongly implicated and admits the BBC's part in the defamation claim but was it really necessary to remind his family of that recent pain. I wonder if the stress of those false allegations by the BBC and others shortened Lord McAlpine's life. I wonder if the BBC care.
But several Twitter users were ordered to pay him damages after the High Court found they had tweeted libellous messages about the peer.
The BBC apologised unreservedly and settled his defamation claim for £185,000. The corporation's then director-general, George Entwistle, resigned in the wake of the allegations, after less than two months in the role.'
Why is he 'reluctant'?
The Times front page has an article entitled 'Police fear inner cities take law into own hands' which includes this passage:
'Chief Inspector of Constabulary... Tom Windsor... said "There are some communities born under other skies who will not involve the police at all. I am reluctant to name the communities in question, but there are communities from other cultures who would prefer to police themselves. There are cities in the Midlands where the police never go because they are never called. They never hear of any trouble because the community deals with that on its own."'
The Times report continues:
'The range of offences not reported to police could include "honour" killings and violence, domestic abuse, sensual assaults on children and female genital mutilation.'
Why is he reluctant to name the communities involved? I think we can guess which could community is the main one involved although as well as Islam The Times has to shoehorn in 'some sections of the Orthodox Jewish community'. Numbers?

Israel's an apartheid state?
Watch this video, what say you now?
Apart from the dreadful attempt to rhyme compare with terror, it's a very thought provoking video. Do watch it all.
And he's right, "And if you think that's Apartheid it's because You don't know what Apartheid really was"
People say Israel's an Apartheid state
But I can't relate to that baseless hate
It's not really fair to try and compare
A racist regime with the war on terror
Using common sense against violence
Israel had to build up the border fence
And if you think that's Apartheid it's because
You don't know what Apartheid really was
For two thousand years the Jews all roamed
But we always called Israel our home
Unlike the British and Dutch who came
To South Africa where they had no claim
They already had countries overseas
But they wanted to expand to new colonies
So they conquered the natives, bought and sold
That land they stole full of diamonds and gold
The whites united and decided to create
South Africa, as a democratic state
But soon they denied blacks voting rights
So the whole government was controlled by whites
The House and the Senate and all of the courts
Were white so the black people got no support
Plus the police would arrest, and beat
Any peaceful protesters in the street
They split everybody into four different races
And moved them by force into separate places
If you were Indian, black, or brown
You had no business in a white town
They had segregation of transportation
Buses, bus stops, trains and train stations
Separate ambulance, different doctor and nurse
And the black hospitals were always worse
Restaurants, hotels, and the public park
Might be off limits if your skin was dark
It was crime and you could get more than a fine
If you crossed the line of that "Whites Only" sign
They had separate teachers at different schools
Black and white beaches and swimming pools
Cafes and movies theaters wouldn't let folks in
Discriminating if they had the wrong color skin
No mixed marriage, it was a criminal act
For a white person to have sex with a black
Apartheid went from the womb til the tomb
Couldn't even take dump in the same bathroom
People say Israel's an Apartheid state
But I can't relate to that baseless hate
It's not really fair to try and compare
A racist regime with the war on terror
Using common sense against violence
Israel had to build up the border fence
And if you think that's Apartheid it's because
You don't know what Apartheid really was
In Israel, Apartheid is not the case
Cause regardless of gender, religion, or race
All Israeli citizens black, brown, and white
Have equal social and political rights
So the Arab Israeli Population
Which makes up twenty percent of the nation
Might be a minority but at least
They can vote, unlike the rest of the Middle East
Look at the whole region you'll see only
Israel is truly a democracy
Every citizen's right to vote is protected
And Arab officials often get elected
That's an important point, let me stress it
There's a dozen Arabs, with seats in the Knesset
Plus an Arab Judge on the Supreme Court
So they don't fall short on government support
Everyone has access to the same schools
The same beaches and the same swimming pools
The same resorts and hotel guestrooms
Same public parks and public restrooms
The same cinemas, restaurants, and cafes
Same trains, buses, taxis, and highways
Same doctors, and nurses, all deliveries
Of babies are done in the same facilities
Arab Israeli life expectancy's great
Up by Twenty seven years since nineteen forty-eight
And their infant mortality rate has declined
From thirty-two per thousand to less than nine
And they're doing much better economically
Relative to every other Arab country
There's no restrictions on choice of career
They're welcome in the military if they volunteer
They can work and reside wherever they please
From Eilat all the way to the sea of Galilee
They live in the very same cities as Jews
On the same street in the same house if they choose
So people say Israel's an Apartheid state
But I can't relate to that baseless hate
It's not really fair to try and compare
A racist regime with the war on terror
Using common sense against violence
Israel had to build up the border fence
And if you think that's Apartheid it's because
You don't know what Apartheid really was
Skyfall question
I'm just watching Skyfall again and that bit where Javier Bardem comes down in that lift rang a bell.
Does anyone else think it's reminiscent of Frankenfurter's entrance in the Rocky Horror Picture Show?
More from the genius that is @The_Mitch92
I've been debating with @The_mitch92 on Twitter. The trouble he's not the brightest of individuals; he's a 9/11 troofer but more of that later.
He made a statement that he didn't trust any Israeli and then narrowed that down to any supporter of the Israeli government. The debate moved on a bit to UK politics, you can see the whole debate on Twitter, and then he posted this...

Gaza Wrecking Ball - A parody of the Miley Cyrus single
"They came in with a wrecking ball
Tore down our homes and all we loved
All we wanted was to live our lives
All they ever did was hate us
Yeah, they, hate us"
In August 2005, the State of Israel forcefully evacuated 9,000 Jews from the Gush Katif "Harvest Belt" of Gaza and from northern Samaria. Orange was the color of the protest. While billed as an act of peace, the operation has caused untold devastation to both Jews and Arabs alike. Ultimately, it was a strategic retreat, an act of appeasement of Palestinian terror and an act of aggression against innocent Jews. The story of the Jewish victims of this tragedy has gone largely untold, until now, in this parody of the Miley Cyrus mega-hit "Wrecking Ball." #gazawreckingball
Read more about the aftermath of the withdrawal through the eyes of a good Gaza girl gone bad in "The Settler," a novel by Orit Arfa. Go to: http://www.amazon.com/The-Settler-ebo...
Appeasing the terrorists didn't work in 2005 and won't work now.

We want any car - driving me nuts
We want any car.com have a series of film based advertisements currently running on TalkSport. One is based upon The Italian Job and features a poor, but recognisable, impression of Michael Caine. The one that is driving me nuts is the one based upon James Bond's Aston Martin DB5. This is a car most famously driven by Sean Connect, although also by Pierce Brosnan & Daniel Craig, so why is the impression of Roger Moore? It's a dreadful impression of Roger Moore as well but why not Sean Connery? Do facts not matter any more?

The BBC: still as pro-EU as ever after all these years
Lord Tebbit gets close:
'I value the BBC. It often produces programmes unmatched by other broadcasters. I like the absence of commercial advertisements, though I regret the increasing intrusion of advertisements for its own programmes and the deplorable prevalence of background music which swamps the voices of those to whom I am trying to listen.I fear, however, that its inability to recognise its Left-wing, pro EU-bias may destroy a great British institution.…'
Personally I'd say that it was too late to save the BBC.

BBC News - Ariel Sharon death: Ex-PM to lie in state in Israel
Unlike with Nelson 'the second Christ' Mandela, on whose death no negative comments were allowed, the BBC's report of the death of Ariel Sharon contains mention of his 'crime':
'... after Israel's invasion of Lebanon in 1982 he was found to have been responsible by an Israeli inquiry of failing to prevent the massacre of Palestinians by Christian Phalangist militia in Beirut's Sabra and Shatila refugee camps.'
I don't recall Nelson Mandela's terrorist past getting much if any coverage on the BBC. Nor was Nelson Mandela held responsible for failing to prevent his wife's fondness for necklacing her opponents.
The end of the BBC report on Ariel Sharon's passing is this:
'Hamas, Gaza's Islamist militant rulers since 2007, condemned him as a tyrant and said his death marked the "disappearance of a criminal whose hands were covered with Palestinian blood".'
Did the BBC allow such comments from terrorists after the death of Nelson Mandela?

Miley Cyrus topless? A Rule 5 Friday NSFW post
Is this photo for real?
Egotastic say:
'...there's been a large number of you sending in this newly uncovered Miley Cyrus topless photo from her Brian Bowen Smith photoshoot, some of which photos appeared in Maxim magazine, though certainly never this topless image. At the time, our CSI community team thought it likely fraudulent, now, hmm, not so sure. It certainly looks like the little funbags of the pop diva in an outtake. So, I'd say, delight in it, but keep a grain of salt nearby.'What do you think?
Yet still we send aid?
I read that:
'A refitted former Soviet aircraft carrier has reached the Indian coast after leaving Russia’s northern shipyard in mid-November, media report said on Wednesday.Remind me how many aircraft carriers the UK has... And yet we continue to send aid to India. If India can afford aircraft carriers they can afford to try and alleviate poverty in that country.
The Vikramaditya, a refurbished Russian carrier formerly known as the Admiral Gorshkov, arrived at a naval base in Kanwar in the western state of Karnataka on Tuesday, Indian IBN television reported citing sources in the Navy.
The aircraft carrier was handed over to the Indian navy on November 16 at the Semvash shipbuilder and departed from Russia on November 26.
A team of Russian specialists arrived onboard the ship and will stay in India for a year to fix any possible glitches if needed.
The Vikramaditya is to become India’s second aircraft carrier. The process of the ship’s official commissioning will take between three and four months.
The refurbishments of the vessel lurched from one crisis to another since the $947 million deal was signed with Russia in 2004 for its purchase and refit.
The delays pushed up the cost of its refurbishing to $2.3 billion, sparking acrimony between Russia and India over the contract.'

The "knockout game" has a real face
The "knockout game" has been increasing in popularity in the USA, sounds like fun?

The one hundred and sixty-eighth weekly "No shit, Sherlock" award
The Telegraph reports that:
'We want a United States of Europe says top EU officialThe EU wants to be a United States of Europe - "No shit, Sherlock"
A campaign for the European Union to become a "United States of Europe" will be the "best weapon against the Eurosceptics", one of Brussels' most senior officials has said.
Viviane Reding, vice president of the European Commission and the longest serving Brussels commissioner, has called for "a true political union" to be put on the agenda for EU elections this spring.
"We need to build a United States of Europe with the Commission as government and two chambers – the European Parliament and a "Senate" of Member States," she said.
Mrs Reding's vision, which is shared by many in the European institutions, would transform the EU into superstate relegating national governments and parliaments to a minor political role equivalent to that played by local councils in Britain.
Under her plan, the commission would have supremacy over governments and MEPs in the European Parliament would supersede the sovereignty of MPs in the House of Commons.National leaders, meeting as the European Council, would be reduced to consultative, second chamber role similar to the House of Lords.'

The survivors of Palestinian terrorism deserve recognition too
'In 2003, Shifri Shapira was injured in a terrorist attack and lost her sight. After 5 years of depression, she decided she wasn’t going to let blindness stop her, and she returned to the hobbies she had before she was injured, and even more (“I went back to cooking, and I started painting and sculpting”). In the next episode of Master Chef she will prove to the judges that where there’s a will there’s a way. “I’m not a poor unfortunate, I don’t want to be thought of like that.”
Shifri Shapira will never forget Wednesday March 5, 2003. In one moment her life changed, when a suicide terrorist blew up the bus that was next to her car. In the attack, 17 were killed, and Shifri and scores of others were injured.
“Suddenly you have nothing”
“Before the attack I was very busy, I didn’t have a single free moment. I have a Ph.D. in Political Science and Criminology,” says Shifri, with an admirable calmness, “and suddenly you have nothing. I didn’t want to carry on living when they told me I had been blinded.”
“Five years ago I woke up and said, ‘I have children, I have a wonderful husband (44 years now) and I want to live’,” says Shifri emotionally. “I returned to my love, to cooking.”'
An odd double standard
Imagine walking into a German restaurant in London and finding a portrait of Adolf Hitler on the wall; very, very unlikely.
Imagine walking into a Russian Restaurant in London and finding a portrait of Josef Stalin on the wall; equally unlikely.
However walk into London's Baozi Inn in Newport Street, part of London's Chinatown, and there's a picture of Chairman Mao on the wall.
Hitler's Nazi regime is estimated to have been responsible for the deaths of around 12 million people, Stalin's Soviet Russia for the deaths of around 9 million people but Mao's Communist regime in China for the deaths of around 45-50 million people. Why is this mass murderer's image not as repellent as Adolf Hitler's?
Baozi Inn is a great Szechuan restaurant but their choice of interior decor is extremely suspect. Time Out in all it's right-on glory says that at Baozi Inn 'kitsch Communist Revolution decor meets northern Chinese street food tidied up for London'. Well if you consider commemorating probably the biggest mass mrderer in world history is 'kitsch' then I think your moral compass is well out of kilter.

Fighting man made climate change or redistributing wealth?
"The climate summit in Cancun at the end of the month is not a climate conference, but one of the largest economic conferences since the Second World War...one must say clearly that de facto we distribute the world's wealth by climate policy.... How many people were killed by Saddam Hussein's regime?
How many people were killed by Saddam Hussein's regime? This is a question that it is hard to answer, there are many answers none of which are 100% accurate (how could they be?) but there are ranges that are agreed upon.
Wikipedia reports that:
Stanford University reports:
The Iraq Foundation reports:
Scaruffi has a handy table listing The worst genocides of the 20th and 21st Centuries:
Saddam Hussein appears at number 13 on the list after Mao's Communist regime in China (49-78 million), Hitler's Nazi Germany (12 million), Leopold II massacre in The Belgium Congo (8 million), Stalin's Communist regime in Russia 9& million), Japanese Emperor Tojo's World War 2 massacres (5 million), The Ottoman Empire's massacres of Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks (2 million), Pol Pot's Cambodian regime (1.7 million), Kil Il Sung's North Korean regime's purges and concentration camps (1.6 million), Menghistu's Ethiopian regime (1.5 million), The Biafran killings (1 million), Leonid Brezhnev's Soviet regime's massacres in Afghanistan (900,000) and the Rwandan genocide of the 1990s (800, 000. The figure attributed to Saddam Hussein is 600,000.
So we have, excluding those victims of war, estimates of between 250,000 and 600,000 people killed by Saddam Hussein's regime. We have an agreed range. Well not totally agreed because @The_Mitch92 claims that only 5,000 were killed. Of course @The_Mitch92 has an agenda, he's claimed that
Wikipedia reports that:
According to The New York Times, "he [Saddam] murdered as many as a million of his people, many with poison gas. He tortured, maimed and imprisoned countless more. His unprovoked invasion of Iran is estimated to have left another million people dead. His seizure of Kuwait threw the Middle East into crisis. More insidious, arguably, was the psychological damage he inflicted on his own land. Hussein created a nation of informants — friends on friends, circles within circles — making an entire population complicit in his rule". Other estimates as to the number of Iraqis killed by Saddam's regime vary from roughly a quarter to half a million, including 50,000 to 182,000 Kurds and 25,000 to 280,000 killed during the repression of the 1991 rebellion.Estimates for the number of dead in the Iran-Iraq war range upwards from 300,000.About.com reports 'Top 5 Crimes of Saddam Hussein', which include:
...it is estimated that up to 182,000 were killed during the Anfal campaign. Many people consider the Anfal campaign an attempt at genocide.
... As early as April 1987, the Iraqis used chemical weapons to remove Kurds from their villages in northern Iraq during the Anfal campaign. It is estimated that chemical weapons were used on approximately 40 Kurdish villages, with the largest of these attacks occurring on March 16, 1988 against the Kurdish town of Halabja.
Beginning in the morning on March 16, 1988 and continuing all night, the Iraqis rained down volley after volley of bombs filled with a deadly mixture of mustard gas and nerve agents on Halabja. Immediate effects of the chemicals included blindness, vomiting, blisters, convulsions, and asphyxiation. Approximately 5,000 women, men, and children died within days of the attacks. Long-term effects included permanent blindness, cancer, and birth defects. An estimated 10,000 lived, but live daily with the disfigurement and sicknesses from the chemical weapons.
...
At the end of the Persian Gulf War in 1991, southern Shiites and northern Kurds rebelled against Hussein's regime. In retaliation, Iraq brutally suppressed the uprising, killing thousands of Shiites in southern Iraq.
As supposed punishment for supporting the Shiite rebellion in 1991, Saddam Hussein's regime killed thousands of Marsh Arabs, bulldozed their villages, and systematically ruined their way of life.
Stanford University reports:
Along with other human rights organizations, The Documental Centre for Human Rights in Iraq has compiled documentation on over 600,000 civilian executions in Iraq. Human Rights Watch reports that in one operation alone, the Anfal, Saddam killed 100,000 Kurdish Iraqis. Another 500,000 are estimated to have died in Saddam's needless war with Iran. Coldly taken as a daily average for the 24 years of Saddam's reign, these numbers give us a horrifying picture of between 70 and 125 civilian deaths per day for every one of Saddam's 8,000-odd days in power"
The Iraq Foundation reports:
DOING the arithmetic is an imprecise venture. The largest number of deaths attributable to Mr. Hussein's regime resulted from the war between Iraq and Iran between 1980 and 1988, which was launched by Mr. Hussein. Iraq says its own toll was 500,000, and Iran's reckoning ranges upward of 300,000. Then there are the casualties in the wake of Iraq's 1990 occupation of Kuwait. Iraq's official toll from American bombing in that war is 100,000 — surely a gross exaggeration — but nobody contests that thousands of Iraqi soldiers and civilians were killed in the American campaign to oust Mr. Hussein's forces from Kuwait. In addition, 1,000 Kuwaitis died during the fighting and occupation in their country.
Casualties from Iraq's gulag are harder to estimate. Accounts collected by Western human rights groups from Iraqi émigrés and defectors have suggested that the number of those who have "disappeared" into the hands of the secret police, never to be heard from again, could be 200,000. As long as Mr. Hussein remains in power, figures like these will be uncheckable, but the huge toll is palpable nonetheless.
Scaruffi has a handy table listing The worst genocides of the 20th and 21st Centuries:
Saddam Hussein appears at number 13 on the list after Mao's Communist regime in China (49-78 million), Hitler's Nazi Germany (12 million), Leopold II massacre in The Belgium Congo (8 million), Stalin's Communist regime in Russia 9& million), Japanese Emperor Tojo's World War 2 massacres (5 million), The Ottoman Empire's massacres of Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks (2 million), Pol Pot's Cambodian regime (1.7 million), Kil Il Sung's North Korean regime's purges and concentration camps (1.6 million), Menghistu's Ethiopian regime (1.5 million), The Biafran killings (1 million), Leonid Brezhnev's Soviet regime's massacres in Afghanistan (900,000) and the Rwandan genocide of the 1990s (800, 000. Correcting a liar or a fool
I have been engaged in a Twitter debate with another anti-Israel type whose grasp on reality is poor. This one goes by the handle @The_Mitch92 and has tweeted that both 9/11 and 7/7 were false flag operations, but more of that later. @The_Mitch92 sees no place for a Jewish state, except maybe in Antarctica, says that Jews have no historical connection with the land of Israel and tries to blame Israel and America for all the troubles of the world.
Here's one example of @The_Mitch92's output and my responses...
@The_Mitch92's response was not to try and justify his initial claim but to ask...
I've told him to look at Ask.com for a start but the Iraqi figures are pretty well accepted and on many sites, as is the less than 5,000 Palestinian deaths figure.
I'd like to see @The_Mitch92 accept that his initial claim was ridiculous but somehow I don't think he's man enough to admit that he was guilty of lying with his initial claim. I'd also quite like to see @The_Mitch92 try and provide figures to backup his claim but that might be tricky...

'At least 10 people have been injured in a grenade attack at a Kenyan tourist resort south of the port city of Mombasa, say police.Attackers hurled the device into a bar in the Diani area late in the night."We had an explosion at the bar and about 10 people were injured," said local police chief Jack Ekakuro, quoted in local media. The injured are said to be in a stable condition and have been taken to hospital.'
A random attack? Or are the BBC hiding who the attackers are and what their motives were? Are the BBC protecting Islamist terrorists again?
