And three hours later a big fat PBY comes down and start to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened? Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went in the water, three hundred and sixteen men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

Tickets linked to stolen passports for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 were purchased by an Iranian man, authorities say.

At least two people on board the plane were traveling on passports stolen from an Austrian and an Italian.

According to Thai police officials, an Iranian man by the name of Kazem Ali purchased the tickets for two friends who he said wanted to return home to Europe. While Ali made the initial booking by telephone, either Ali or someone acting on his behalf paid for the tickets in cash, according to police.

Well he was right

Before the World Indoor Athletics Championships Richard Kilty said what he could achieve...

'Richard Kilty wants to show he deserves a place in the World Indoors 60m... the Teesside sprinter beat French duo Christophe Lemaitre and Jimmy Vicaut, and American Mike Rodgers last Saturday, all of whom have broken the 10-second barrier over 100 metres.

"I think I can run sub 6.50. I was a little fatigued in Birmingham on Saturday having raced three hard rounds in the UK trials the weekend before.

"There are little things to improve on technically in terms of being a little tense, and leaning for the line a little too early.

"If I can run that perfect race, there's so many guys within a couple of hundredths that I think I can go to Poland and win."But that's the case for a lot of athletes. My first target is make the final as then anything can happen."'

In Poland he did indeed make the final, break 6.50 in the final (running 6.49) & so win gold by hundredths of a second. Well done Richard Kilty.

The Mandrake column in today's Telegraph reports that Nigella Lawson's dinner parties are much more relaxed post her separation from Charles Saatchi.

Male vs Female in sport - weightlifting

Further to this morning's post and the continued claims from @SexismInSports that 'Women are NOT the weaker sex' I thought I'd compare a sport where strength is of great importance, although technique does also play an important part, weightlifting.

The trouble with making direct comparisons is that the weight (of the competitor) categories are not always directly comparable so I have compared in all but one case only where the women are in a higher weight category, thus giving them a slight advantage. The exception to this is in the highest women's category when women of any weight above 75kg compete, in this case I have compared with the men's 77kg category as there is no 75kg category. However for the men this is a restricted category with four heavier categories whereas for women there is no weight restriction in this category, so theoretically the women competing in this class could be many kilos heavier than the men.

If you look at this comparison you will see that the men at any given weight lift more than women. Taken across all the classes there is an average male superiority of 19.1%. However that includes the last wight class that gives women an unfair advantage, excluding that weight class gives men a superiority of 21.52%

So are women the weaker sex in weightlifting? In which sport are they not?

The other day I heard some women complaining about sexism in sports coverage and today I was told, contrary to the demonstrable facts, that 'women are NOT the weaker sex' - so this post is for @SexismInSports.

I thought I'd show the current world records for Olympic athletics events - with the addition of the mile because it's my favourite event and of historic importance, and the taking out of the walks and multi-discipline events. Then I compared the men with the women to show how much faster, higher or longer the men's records are. You will see a few lines where the women's records would seem to be better than the men's record, a glance at the last two columns will explain why. In the sprint hurdles the women run 9% shorter and over much lower hurdles and the men are still quicker. In the 3000m steeplechase the hurdles are lower and the men are still quicker. In the throwing events you'll notice that the men's objects are around twice the weight of the women's (apart from the javelin where it's only 33.3% heavier) and the men still generally throw further. Taking into account all of these adjustments the men are still 11.22% better than the women. Now do you see why people prefer to watch men compete, they are better.

In football and cricket, women play at a fair level but nowhere near the men's standard. But it is tennis that is the sport where women most often claim parity with men, I think not.  I have heard some women try and convince the stupid that women have beaten men on straight match terms. As far as I am aware there have been four such singles matches over the years.

The first two matches were between an ageing Bobby Riggs (55 at the time of the matches) and the then still top women players Margaret Court and Billie Jean King. Riggs won the first and lost the second. This was less about men versus women than old versus young.

The next match was between Jimmy Connors and Martina Navratilova. Jimmy Connors was then aged 40 and Martina Navratilova was aged 35. It was over the best of three sets and the hybrid rules favoured the female player in that Jimmy Connors was allowed only one serve per point, and Martina Navratilova was allowed to hit into half the doubles court. Jimmy Connors still won  7–5, 6–2.


The last match that I can recall was held during the 1998 Australian Open between the then 31 year old Karsten Braasch and the Williams sisters then aged 17 and 16 respectively. Prior to the matches the Williams sisters had claimed that they could beat any male player ranked below 200. Braasch was then ranked 203rd and challenged them both. Braasch first took on Venus and beat her 6–2. He then played Serena and won 6-1. It seems that Serena Williams has learned her lesson because when in 2013, Andy Murray responded to a Twitter user who asked whether he would consider challenging Serena Williams, by saying "I’d be up for it. Why not?" Williams reacted positively to the suggestion, remarking "That would be fun. I doubt I’d win a point, but that would be fun.

So parity in tennis? I think not.

Any sports where there is parity? How about where women out perform men? I'll wait, yes...

Yes he's gone off in a fake huff...

Equal treatment for UKIP?

The Telegraph reports that:

'Ukip have been given a boost in the run up to the European elections after Ofcom ruled that broadcasters have to treat them in the same way as any other major party.

The decision means Ukip will be given the same status as the Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats for election broadcasts and news coverage of the May 22 contest.'

If the BBC do actually give UKIP equal status to Labour, Conservatives and the LibDems then the type of coverage will be similar to the Conservatives not Labour. The BBC's coverage of the Labour party will as usual be overwhelmingly positive with soft soap interviews and adoring comment. Meanwhile the BBC's coverage of the Conservative party will as usual be overwhelmingly negative with hard arsed interviews and negative comments. UKIP can expect the same or worse than the Conservative party because the BBC know what they want and it's a majority labour government.

The evil side of Twitter

I have spoken of @DD1958 aka POPS! before, he's the nasty piece of work who denies Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state, claims all of Israel is Palestinian land and calls Israel an apartheid state.

What really gets my goat (pun intended) is the way that he and others try to equate Israel's treatment of the Palestinians with the treatment of the Jews by the Nazis. This comparison is not only demonstrably false, it's deliberately offensive.

Earlier today I saw a comparison of Auschwitz and Gaza on Twitter, so I re-tweeted it to @DD1958 and some others who were associated with this tweet...

One half is a seriously unpleasant image of Jewish children suffering in Auschwitz but it's an image that we should never forget so long as there are Islamists (and others) that both want to recreate the holocaust whilst oddly often denying that it happened in the first place. People like Mahmoud Abbas and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - that's the joy of being (or supporting) Palestinians; being able to hold two contradictory opinions at the same time but not to be challenged on this.

@DD1958 aka Pops! however decided he could 'take offence', accused me of posting 'porn' and reported me for so doing.

His motives are clear. Supporters of the 'Palestinans' make many offensive and untrue claims about Israel and they just can't abide the truth being publicised. Censorship of the truth was a favourite tactic of the Nazis in Germany, the communists in Soviet Russia and many other dictators and totalitarians throughout history, thankfully free speech does still exist in the West, well just about, despite the best efforts of people like @DD1958.

The BBC must be so frustrated this morning

Ordinarily the news that a David Cameron aide had been arrested for anything, let alone an offence "relating to child abuse imagery", would be headline news at the BBC.

However the PIE affair is still hanging over Labour's Deputy Leader Harriet Harman and her husband Jack "winner of an all women's shortlist" Dromey. Also we all remember very clearly that the BBC ignored the PIE story until it was impossible to continue to do so.

So the BBC just can't go big on this story, they must be so frustrated this morning.

BBC fakery

I'm just watching an old Top Gear, it's what Dave HD was made for, and it's the one where Jeremy Clarkson drives a Peel P50 microcar.

Ostensibly he's travelling to work but in reality that car park that he starts off in is one of the car parks in the newer BBC compound off of the A40. So the route Jeremy takes, so far as we can see, is out of the BBC, then east along Holland Park Avenue before turning left out of Wood lane onto the A402 on Shepherds Bush and then and east along Holland Park Avenue before parking in front of the same (or one of the same) buildings he was originally parked underneath. Not only is the route shown impossible to do in that order, it is also completely unnecessary as Jeremy ends up less than 200 yards from where he started.

The problem with facts

The truth is that when Jordan invaded 'the West Bank' and held it between 1950 and 1967 and likewise Egypt with Gaza, there were no screams of protest from the 'Palestinians' about 'occupation'.But when the Israelis (for which you can read Jews) took back these two areas in the 1967 war, suddenly the 'Palestinians' decide that they are being occupied...

@DD1958 can't think of a reason to explain this, I wonder why...

Why the disparity in treatment?

Why was it necessary for the furtherance of peace in Northern Ireland to issue Royal Pardons to some convicted IRA terrorists and comfort letters to 200 others but to investigate the British Army's actions on Bloody Sunday? 

Other than Tony Blair and his government being pro Irish Republicanism, can you think of a reason?

Actually there is the possibility that supporting the IRA was trendy in the 1970s amongst the British left, just as other 'Civil Liberties' matters were.

Where's the outrage in the United Nations or online?

Even the BBC are reporting that:

The directive from ISIS, citing the Islamic concept of "dhimma", requires Christians in the city to pay tax of around half an ounce (14g) of pure gold in exchange for their safety.

Christians must not carry arms, and must follow other rules imposed by ISIS (also known as ISIL) on their daily lives.

The statement said the group had met Christian representatives and offered them three choices - they could convert to Islam, accept ISIS' conditions, or reject their control and risk being killed.

"If they reject, they are subject to being legitimate targets, and nothing will remain between them and ISIS other than the sword," the statement said.

A group of 20 Christian leaders chose to accept the new set of rules, ISIS said.

Several things strike me about this report:
1. Where are the human rights organisations protesting this attack on freedom of religion? The organisations that are always ready to condemn Israel for any perceived slight on Islam.
2. Where's the United Nations outrage?
3. Where's the headline news on the BBC or in The Guardian or Independent that would appear if Israel stopped one Muslim from worshipping exactly where he wanted?

The lack of outrage from the above organisations would almost make one believe that they were in some way biased against Israel.

Why does Vladimir Putin think he can get away with invading the Ukraine?

When President Obama was taking part in a global nuclear security summit in South Korea, he was caught on tape asking for Russian President Dmitry Medvedev for "space." "This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility," Obama implored. Obama assured the departing Russian President he will have the "flexibility" required to deal with missile defense issues after the 2012 presidential election. What other issues might Obama be more flexible over?

The BBC not quite reporting the whole story re the sentencing of the murderers of Lee Rigby

Compare this BBC article with this Telegraph one, specifically the part about the fracas that occurred during sentencing.

As Mr Justice Sweeney began to sentence the men they started shouting and scuffling with court security guards. They had to be forced to the ground and were removed from court.

Fusilier Rigby's family wept as Adebolajo shouted "Allahu Akbar", and Adebowale called out "that's a lie" as the judge told them their extremist views were "a betrayal of Islam".

One relative needed medical treatment after the outbursts. The judge later apologised for the fact that the family had to witness what happened in the dock.'

The Telegraph:

'Michael Adebolajo, 29, and Michael Adebowale, 22, had to be manhandled out of court by security guards after being told by Mr Justice Sweeney that their crime was a “betrayal of Islam”.

I suppose that it is just about possible that an Islamist murderer might know more about Islam than the British High Court Sir Nigel Hamilton Sweeney. But more interesting is that the BBC saw fit to censor what was actually said, why?

Well done Bjorn Kjellstrom, Head of the UK Office of the European Parliament, for helping the Eurosceptic cause no end. While berating British journalists in a letter for not correctly reporting EU matters, the grumpy Swede has let the cat out the bag: “not all citizens are aware that possibly a majority of the laws that have an impact on their daily lives are decided on by MEPs in the European Parliament.” Something swivel-eyed Europhiles always try to deny…

Maureen Lipman cuts ties with Oldie magazine per The Jewish Chronicle

The last line of this Jewish Chronicle piece is just so revealing...

'Actress Maureen Lipman has severed her professional links with The Oldie magazine, claiming she will no longer tolerate its monthly “drip-drip of antisemitic, anti-Jewish, anti-Israel material”.

Ms Lipman is a long-time contributor to the magazine, which was set up 21 years ago by former Private Eye editor Richard Ingrams. She is also a regular judge at its Oldie Of The Year Awards.

But following an article published in its March issue, in which travel writer Dervla Murphy described Hebron as a ghost town left ravaged by the shooting of Palestinians by American-Israeli Baruch Goldstein in 1994, Ms Lipman accused Mr Ingrams of “anti-Zionist bias”.

She said: “There’s an insidious nature to what is being written. Why would I be involved with that?“All I ask for is a level playing-field. They’re grinding babies into powder in Syria — get that in your middle page. I can’t just stand there at my age and contribute to something which is feeding the myth.”

Mr Ingrams said: “I am very disappointed that Maureen will no longer contribute to the magazine, but I’m not surprised because she has been unhappy for a long time about what has been featured in The Oldie.“

She does have a very straightforward view — that critical comments about Israel should be balanced by critical comments about Arab countries.“Well, the BBC may feel itself obliged to give what they call a balanced view, but we’re not under any obligation of that kind.”'

Harriet Harman: the unanswered question

In the BBC coverage of this story and Harriet Harman's online statement I can see no mention of this point: In a letter to the Home Office in April 1978, the NCCL argued that child pornography should not be banned as “indecent” unless it could be shown that the child depicted had been harmed. The NCCL official who wrote this letter was its legal officer, Harriet Harman.

Am I correct, did she sign that letter? Why?

Dara says BBC ban on all-male TV panel shows is laughable

Apparently BBC director of television Danny Cohen has pledged that "we're not going to have any more panel shows with no women on them". 

I'm not too bothered by the new pledge, so long as it's not just endless Jo Brand and that short unfunny lesbian (not Sandi Toksvig, one of the other ones that the BBC adores). No I'm not prejudiced against lesbians, my lesbian friends would back me up on this I'm sure, but the BBC does seem to have a seam of lesbians that they have been mining for a while now; unfortunately they've gone from the decently funny Sandi Toksvig, through the occasionally funny Sue Perkins, to the deeply unfunny Rhona Cameron (coincidentally Sue Perkins' ex) and finally to the woeful Susan Calman who I've just remembered the name of, but not any of her jokes.

I wonder if the BBC will also look for political parity on panel shows, or is an over representation of extreme lefty types such as Mark Steele and Jeremy Hardy fine so long as Jeremy Clarkson appears once in a blue moon? 

The BBC's attitude to bias is in itself deeply biased.
