Then why was he in the Labour government for so long?

The Mirror, a paper I hardly ever even glance at, has a piece loyally attacking Geoff Hoon and Patricia Hewitt. In the article Geoff Hoon is described as
"A serial blunderer and failed schemer

In the playground of politics, Geoff Hoon has a reputation for being a of a dunce.

His career is so littered with blunders even his friends call him "Buff" Hoon."
Whilst Patricia Hewitt is denounced thus:
"Former Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt is nicknamed "Nanny" because of the hectoring tone she takes with colleagues and voters.

Her ministerial career depended on Tony Blair and died the day he left No10.

She started on the hard left of Labour but moved so far right she was one of Blair's last supporters.

A feminist, she suggested men can't be trusted with children. As Trade Secretary in 2005 she was found guilty of sex discrimination for handing a job to a woman over a stronger male candidate. Ms Hewitt, also the Equality minister, never apologised.

As Health Secretary she was pilloried in 2006 for claiming the NHS had enjoyed its "best ever year" despite thousands of job cuts. She announced she was leaving the Commons after the expenses scandal."

It struck me that what does it it say about Tony Blair and Gordon Brown that they kept "A serial blunderer and failed schemer... a dunce" in high offices of state for a decade. I did try and search The Mirror for their denunciations of Geoff Hoon's unsuitability for office from past years but their search function seems to be SNAFU.

It also strikes me that people who have claimed that Patricia Hewitt was acting as an outrider for Harriet Harman may have a point after all "in 2005 she was found guilty of sex discrimination for handing a job to a woman over a stronger male candidate. Ms Hewitt, also the Equality minister, never apologised." I wonder how Harriet reacted to this?
