On Monday I blogged about how the BBC's Poll Tracker was being updated. I have had a look this morning and see that although the latest YouGov poll has been added to Poll Tracker, a poll which shows an increased Conservative lead, it has not been included in the 'Poll of Polls' chart. The Poll Tracker 'Poll of Polls' recently became the default chart so with the trickery on Sunday/Monday to arrange the Poll Tracker database update to the benefit of Labour's figures and today's non-updating of the 'Poll of Polls', the BBC can still talk about 'narrowing polls'.
This sort of statistical chicanery is more common than you might think and is well documented in the area of climate change 'science'; take a read of Steve McIntyre's Climate Audit and/or Joanne Nova for plenty of examples. It is something that is practised by people trying to prove a point and/or manipulate opinion rather than report facts; so where does that leave the BBC during a general election campaign?
