Antarctic glaciers and climate change

Last August the BBC reported that:
'One of the largest glaciers in Antarctica is thinning four times faster than it was 10 years ago, according to research seen by the BBC.

A study of satellite measurements of Pine Island glacier in west Antarctica reveals the surface of the ice is now dropping at a rate of up to 16m a year.

Since 1994, the glacier has lowered by as much as 90m, which has serious implications for sea-level rise.

The work by British scientists appears in Geophysical Research Letters.

The team was led by Professor Duncan Wingham of University College London (UCL).

...

Calculations based on the rate of melting 15 years ago had suggested the glacier would last for 600 years. But the new data points to a lifespan for the vast ice stream of only another 100 years.

...

Professor Box told BBC News: "The science community has been surprised by how sensitive these large glaciers are to climate warming. First it was the glaciers in south Greenland and now as we move further north in Greenland we find retreat at major glaciers. It's like removing a cork from a bottle."'
Scary and backed by science! Well it seems not as today the BBC report that:
'The discovery of an underwater ridge in West Antarctica could help explain why there has been an acceleration in the ice flowing from a glacier in the area.

Researchers suggest that the base of Pine Island Glacier once sat on the ridge, but recently became detached from the feature.

The team made the discovery during surveys that used a unmanned submarine to examine waters under the glacier.

The findings have been published in the journal Nature Geoscience.'

The new article is much more measured and calm than its predecessor and I presume will get less attention as a result.

The joys of Sharia law

The BBC have to report that:
'Somali militants have threatened football fans they will be publicly flogged - or worse - if they are caught watching the World Cup on TV.

Gangs of Islamists are reported to be patrolling the areas they control looking for people watching games.

Dedicated fans are watching matches in secret, or in the few areas controlled by government forces.

On Saturday militants killed two people as they attacked a house where people were watching a game.

Militant group Hizbul-Islam also arrested 10 others at the house north-east of the capital Mogadishu where fans were watching the game between Argentina and Nigeria.

A spokesman for the group, Sheikh Mohamed Abdi Aros said the rest of Somalia should respect their ban on the World Cup.

"We are warning all the youth of Somalia not to dare watch these World Cup matches. It is a waste of money and time and they will not benefit anything or get any experience by watching mad men jumping up and down," he said.'
The BBC finally get upset with Sharia Law, when it affects people who want to watch the World Cup. They are less bothered about adulteresses being stoned to death though.

BBC Poll Tracker at it again

I have reported before how the BBC's Poll Tracker seems to update only after the most favourable of a group of opinion polls. It seems that the BBC are at it again as the last poll shown on Poll Tracker is the ICM poll from 9 January which showed the Conservatives unchanged on 40% with Labour down 1% at 30%. Oddly the more recent You Gov poll that showed the Conservatives unchanged on 42% and Labour unchanged on 30% has still not been updated and neither has the latest Populus poll that shows the Conservatives up 3% at 41% and Labour down 2% at 28%.

I would complain about this lack of updating but no doubt I would just get a reply from the BBC telling me, like last time, that: "We have had some minor technical problems with the polltracker which are being rectified this morning. Both polls will shortly appear. Please be assured there is no intent to distort the data in favour of any of the main parties.".
