The one hundred and thirty second weekly "No shit, Sherlock" award

This week's winners are the International Atomic Energy Authority for their leaked conclusions as reported on Al Jazeera:

'A Syrian site bombed by Israel in 2007 was "very likely" to have been a nuclear reactor, the UN atomic agency has said in a report, a conclusion which may lead to Damascus being referred to the UN Security Council.

The confidential report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) threw independent weight behind US allegations that Syria was secretly building a reactor at the Dair Alzour site in the desert, possibly with military aims.'

So the Syrian site bombed by Israel was a nuclear reactor; "No shit, Sherlock"

What is it with International bodies?

To add to Libya being elected to the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC), we now have Pakistan heading up the United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). How is this sensible? Pakistan has not even signed up to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

A nuclear Iran

A nuclear Iran may be nearer than many thought, The Times report that:

"President Bush is to hold White House talks with the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Monday after publication of a nuclear watchdog’s report this week showing that Iran may have stockpiled enough enriched uranium to make a nuclear bomb.

The International Atomic Energy Agency believes that Iran has amassed 630kg of low enriched uranium, up from 480kg in late August. Some experts believe this is enough to produce the weapons-grade material needed for a crude nuclear device similar in size to that which America used to destroy the city of Nagasaki at the end of the Second World War."

So what is to come? An Iranian nuclear attack on Tel Aviv, followed by an Israeli retaliation that leaves Tehran a wasteland? An Iranian sponsored terrorist attack with dirty bombs on several Israeli cities, with the same response? An Iranian sponsored terrorist attack with dirty bombs on several European and/or American cities, with what response?

The world is a very dangerous place and just got even more so.

Syria and the IAEA

Further to my earlier postings, here and here about the Israeli's destruction by bombing of a "facility" in Syria, it is being reported that nine months after the "facility" was destroyed the Syrians are to allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to inspect the site.

Nine months, during which time the Syrians have razed to the ground the al-Kibar "facility" and barred the IAEA from visiting the area, this barring put the Syrian government in breach of its treaty obligations to the IAEA.

With the Syrians in breach of his organisation's treaty obligations, Mohamed ElBaradei, the head of the IAEA, decided that his top priority was to renew his criticism of Israel and the US for withholding intelligence about the "facility".


When will Western governments realise that the United Nations and most of its agencies are institutionally biased against the West and Israel in particular and that they are happy to take our money to fund their activities which are often used against us.
