Whatever one thinks of Hobsbawn's communism (he is entitled to his own position on the political spectrum), it was his unfailing support for the USSR despite the well-known atrocities *and* its dealings with Hitler early in WWII that put him beyond the pale.
Alex you might want to try and persuade @northbriton45 of this, he seems to be happy to defend Hobsbawm.
