Today Prince Charles overtakes the then Prince Edward who acceded to the throne as Edward VII, to become the longest-serving heir-apparent and the longest-serving Prince of Wales, so far 59 years, 2 months and 14 days.

Long may he wait too - HM the Queen surely wishes to exceed Queen Victoria's 64 year record, so, DV & health permitting, will be on the throne until 2016 at least.
I hope the succession jumps a generation, as Charles is mad as a box of frogs and would do untold damage to the country if ever made king.
I am not sure that I agree with you. His views on climate Change are deeply flawed as are his Arabist tendencies. However his views on architecture are understandable and I think he was very badly treated by much of the media over the divorce with Diana, Princes of Wales.
