I am not a sheep, I have my own mind
I have had enough of being told what and how to think
Whilst we are still allowed the remnants of free speech, I will speak out.
I also reserve the right to discuss less controversial matters should I feel the urge.
The Chinese tactic in its outlying areas has been to send in people from the Han Chinese population to live in the area and so change the original ethnic composition of the area. This tactic has been tried in Tibet and Uyghur as I am sure you are aware.
With the above in mind I was not surprised to read that
"Another section of the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony has been exposed as faked - the children supposedly representing the country's 56 ethnic groups were in fact all from the same one, the majority Han Chinese race."
It is odd how "the left" will be up in arms over any perceived attack on the religion of multi-culturism in the UK but China will get a free pass over this in the Guardian and Independent.
Whilst checking the news this morning the BBC news website was operating at normal speeds and normal levels of bias, whilst Sky News was down for a while and is now really slow but less biased.
I watched this video and my first thought was that I didn't know that John McCain had adopted a Bangladeshi girl with a cleft palate. I am damn sure that if Barack Obama had done this then I would know all about it and would have seen documentary pieces about it, but as it would show John McCain in a good light...... nothing but tumbleweed.
You can read more about John McCain's adoption of Bridget here.
The BBC breathlessly reveal in a quiet part of their website that
"China has set aside three parks during the Olympics, to allow people to demonstrate. But, as the BBC's Michael Bristow finds out, the parks are empty and those who apply for permission to protest are even finding themselves arrested."
Who would have thought that? Thank heavens we can protest freely in the UK, wherever we want... what we can't?
According to Spectator Coffee House an anagram of "The Deputy Prime Minister John Leslie Prescott" is "Hits, injures. (Hot-tempered, completely inept, sir)".
A man died and went to heaven. As he stood in front of St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, he saw a huge wall of clocks behind him. He asked, 'What are all those clocks?'
St. Peter answered, 'Those are Lie-Clocks. Everyone on Earth has a Lie-Clock. Every time you lie the hands on your clock will move.'
'Oh,' said the man, 'whose clock is that?'
'That's Mother Teresa's. The hands have never moved, indicating that she never told a lie.'
'Incredible,' said the man. 'And whose clock is that one?'
St. Peter responded, 'That's Abraham Lincoln's clock. The hands have moved twice, telling us that Abe told only two lies in his entire life.'
'Where's Senator Obama's clock?' asked the man. 'Obama's clock is in Jesus' office. He's using it as a ceiling fan.'
"BBC News certainly does not have a line on climate change, however the weight of our coverage reflects the fact that there is an increasingly strong (although not overwhelming) weight of scientific opinion in favour of the proposition that climate change is happening and is being largely caused by man.
BBC news programmes and our website of course reflect alternative views but we do not balance these views mathematically as that is not our judgement about where the argument has now reached.
That is definitely not the same as us propagating a view ourselves about climate change. It's not our job to do that."
The BBC being obsessed by Man Made Climate Change and the "fact" that we are all to blame could not let any views opposed to Man Made Climate Change get on air and so it with no great surprise that I learn that the BBC held a seminar with the following result
"The BBC has held a high-level seminar with some of the best scientific experts, and has come to the view that the weight of evidence no longer justifies equal space being given to the opponents of the consensus [on anthropogenic climate change]."
You may want to take a trip to Harmless Sky for more on this matter.
Yet another record year for A Level results is being reported but does anyone believe the figures bear any relation to reality? This Government have devalued the GCSE and the A Level so as to make comparisons with the results of 20 years ago absolutely laughable. Research has shown that an A grade at A level in 2008 would have been worth a C grade in 1988. Of course the Labour government are using their standard line that we should all congratulate pupils on their hard work and not carp about comparisons, that should be left for another time, i.e. never.
So a 97%+ pass rate with 25%+ getting an A grade is not the result of grade-inflation and/or dumbing down of the exams; do you believe that? When I was doing A levels, an A grade was the sign of an exceptional candidate and even my school was a relative rarity. To get three or four A grades at A level was an incredible achievement, now it seems relatively commonplace. You cannot tell me that the candidates of 2008 are that much cleverer or even work that much harder than we did; the exams are easier...
I have covered this subject several times over the last year or so, maybe a re-reading of a few of these articles might prove interesting - July 2007, December 2007, June 2008 and July 2008.
"Our own observatory at Armagh is one of the oldest in the world and has been observing solar cycles for more than 200 years.
What this work has shown is that, over all of this time, short and intense cycles coincide with global warmth and long and weak cycles coincide with cooling.
Most recently, this pattern continued in the 1980s and 1990s when cycles 21 and 22 were short (less than 10 years) and intense and it was notably hot. But all this now looks set to change.
Cycle 23, which hasn't finished yet, looks like it will be long (at least 12 to 13 years) and cycle 24, which has still to start, looks like it will be exceptionally weak.
Based on the past Armagh measurements, this suggests that over the next two decades, global temperatures may fall by about 2 degrees C — that is, to a level lower than any we have seen in the last 100 years. Of course, nothing in science is certain. Perhaps (though I doubt it) Armagh's old measurements are wrong or perhaps there are now other factors, such as CO2 emissions, which may change things somewhat.
However, temperatures have already fallen by about 0.5 degrees C over the past 12 months and, if this is only the start of it, it would be a serious concern.
Northern Ireland is not noted for extreme warmth at the best of times and has much more to fear from cold weather than it does from hot. We really need to be sure what is going to happen before spending too much money on combating global warming.
We may need all the money we can save just to help us keep warm.

I don't expect the closed minds of the Green movement to listen to any contrary facts, they "know" the "truth" about Global Warming and that is that - they are in full "la la la can't hear you" mode.
Further to my post last December about how if you take into accounts all of the different spellings of the name Mohammed, that name was the second most popular name of 2007 for boys. Today I learn from The Independent (it was a quiet morning and that was the only paper available at this client) that
"while many traditional names are fading into obscurity, other recent additions are flourishing. Mohammad was the 17th most popular boy's name last year, while Muhammad was the 38th most popular. More boys born in Britain last year were named after the Prophet than were given any other name."
I am not sure if I was right in December or The Independent is right now, but should we be coincerned that the most popular boys name in the UK is a variant of Mohammed?
I see that another person has fallen victim to the curse of Gordon. This time it is Scottish Labour MP John MacDougall who has died after a long illness. The BBC report that
"The Dunfermline-born married father-of-two had been a patient at the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, where he was visited by Mr Brown on Monday."
A visit from Gordon Brown that could tip a healthy man over the edge. Is there any way of Gordon Brown coming with a Government Health Warning from now on?
I wonder if Gordon Brown is looking forward to another by-election in Scotland? Guido Fawkes is reporting that
"The latest poll (conducted 6-8 August) carried out in Scotland by YouGov recorded the biggest ever poll lead for the SNP with the party gaining a 19% lead over the Labour.... the SNP on 44% with Labour trailing on 25%."
A letter in Monday's Telegraph caught my eye, I quote the opening two sentences:
"SIR - Conditions in China have changed beyond recognition since I worked there in the early 1960s. Despite unhelpful distractions such as Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution, remarkable progress has been made."
An interesting phrase that, "unhelpful distractions"; I am not sure that I would use such a bland phrase to describe the process that resulted in the deaths of between 20 million and 70 million people.
The letter writer, John Molloy, finished his letter thus:
"To human rights campaigners, I say back off a little and allow further change to evolve from within."
How many more deaths would you say were acceptable in the next phase of this "remarkable progress"?
For an interesting analysis of the "unhelpful distractions" in China under Mao take a read of this.
What a performance for Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms to come back and beat the second seeds from China from a seemingly hopeless position at 17-12 down in the third set, to win 21-19. An incredible performance from the 2006 World Champions, they are a very talented duo. Mind you Zheng Bo does seem to be the wrong build for a badminton player, a bit on the chunky side... maybe I could make a comeback, maybe not!
I know you will find this hard to believe but it appears that if you allow 24 hour drinking then alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour increases. A real surprise I know, who could have predicted that when this Labour government decided that introducing 24 hour drinking would create a European style cafe culture. The latest crime statistics show a 136% increase in public order offences over the last four years. Again, who would have believed that allowing pubs and clubs to stay open longer and serve drinks longer would lead to drink-related disorder problems happening in the early hours of the morning rather than at the old closing times.
The result of our Labour masters deciding to de-restrict drinking hours is more alcohol fuelled violence, happening later in the evening which means more police having to be deployed at these very unsocial hours which means less police around during the more normal hours that people might need them.
The Government response, a spokesman for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport said "The recent evaluation of The Licensing Act showed that it has not led to an increase in crime and disorder". You have to admire these people, many of them have "believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast" on a regular basis.
Finally this Labour government have realised that the 50% target is not the holy grail that they have previously claimed. This week John Denham, the relevant Minister, said that higher education should not be sold as the only option for their future. Maybe this government after 11 years has realised that political dogma should be replaced by realism.
The Institute of Directors found that 71% of its members believe that the writing skills of new recruits have worsened in recent years. 60% believe that numeracy skills have declined. Will someone please explain to this Labour government that spending more money does not necessarily result in improved services.
Well how else can we explain how there can be a war in Europe and yet we hear not a peep from our courageous Prime Minister. We were told that Gordon Brown would still be in charge of the Government whilst on holiday in Southwold, does that statement hold true when he is away from the family in Scotland? What is happening in the upper echelons of this Labour government? Is there anything other than in-fighting and power struggles?
Gordon Brown keeps saying how concerned he is about oil prices so has he nothing to say about a war being fought on the borders of the EU over oil supplies?
Some more interesting Google search terms that lead people to my site recently:
pringles cort case in england is it cake - For which this blog ranks 3rd - I am especially impressed by the misspelling of court and thinking that Pringles might be a cake - Please see my article to see that Pringles are not potato crisps, you may also want to read up on Jaffa Cakes and Teacakes, who said UK tax was boring?
SHARIA JANE PARKER DR. WHO - for which this blog ranks 7th - I think the searcher might have been looking for Sarah Jane Smith and got a bit confused...
I see that Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling's teams are briefing against each other.
"Allies of Mr Darling believe he was ‘stitched up’ by a Downing Street briefing operation designed to test the popularity of possible moves to suspend the tax....a Labour MP close to Mr Darling claimed he was being deliberately undermined by No10 in preparation for being demoted in the September reshuffle."
Meanwhile,
"Mr Brown’s camp furiously deny being behind the shambles but one senior Treasury source said last night: ‘It certainly wasn’t us that briefed it. You work it out.’"
Both sides apparently can agree on one key point:
"...Downing Street strongly denied having ‘floated’ the story, which appeared in newspapers on Tuesday, saying the only two people who brief in Downing Street were both on holiday at the time.
The Treasury also issued a statement to say it ‘has no knowledge of the source of the story’."
Even the BBC have to report that Katerina Thanou, the disgraced Greek sprinter who you can read more about in my earlier article, has been excluded from the Beijing Games after the International Olympic Committee refused to accredit her. Good Thanou and Keneteris behaved disgracefully in 1004 and it is to the credit of the IOC that they have acted this Olympics. Somehow I doubt that the IOC will quite as quick to react to any doping offences committed by Chinese athletes - more on this matter later.
Isaac Hayes, one of the greatest soul singers of all time has died. Whilst not as well known as some and to many known best for his being the voice of South Park's "chef", he was a true musical great. If you don't know his music at all then listen to the theme from Shaft
If you are ready for a bit more SOUL then go and buy Isaac Hayes' masterpiece album - Hot Buttered Soul - and luxuriate in his 12 minute version of Walk on By, his almost 19 minute version of By the time I get to Phoenix and of course Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic, pure soul/funk...
"Wow did you see that opening ceremony?" I have lost count of how many people have asked me that over the past few days. "No", I have replied; I am boycotting the Olympics, except for watching all of the sports coverage of course.
"As the ceremony got under way with a dramatic, drummed countdown, viewers watching at home and on giant screens inside the Bird's Nest National Stadium watched as a series of giant footprints outlined in fireworks processed gloriously above the city from Tiananmen Square.
What they did not realise was that what they were watching was in fact computer graphics, meticulously created over a period of months and inserted into the coverage electronically at exactly the right moment.
The fireworks were there for real, outside the stadium. But those responsible for filming the extravaganza decided in advance it would be impossible to capture all 29 footprints from the air.
As a result, only the last, visible from the camera stands inside the Bird's Nest was captured on film.
The trick was revealed in a local Chinese newspaper, the Beijing Times, at the weekend."
Now we know that the Chinese have faked part of the opening ceremony coverage, and are accused of faking the Beijing pollution statistics, I wonder what else might be being faked in these Olympics. Will the boxing judging be as fair as it was in Seoul? Will the gymnastics judging be entirely fair? Are we sure that the swimming pool, where world records are being broken quite regularly, is exactly the right length?
"British scientists monitoring air quality in Beijing have been ordered to close down their website after their readings clashed with official statistics showing the city was meeting its pollution targets."
Can you think of another world government who might be accused of fiddling official statistics to their advantage?
The ever mealy-mouthed IOC responded to this suppression of the truth thus:
"A spokesman for the International Olympic Committee cited Arne Ljungqvist, an IOC official, as having said it had no reason to doubt statistics from the Beijing city environmental protection bureau."
Read the rest of the Telegraph article and ask yourself which set of figures you think might be more believable.
From James Marshall, as reported in the Sunday Telegraph, commenting on the lack of people watching the Olypics in Beijing's "great squares" because of the tighter than a gnat's arse security in Beijing
"It seems like they wanted perfection, but forgot that you also need some real people too."
Yesterday I blogged that Russia's invasion of Georgia was to do with Putin wanting all of those south and central Asian countries' oil to be fed into the Russian system and so be under his control. Today I read that:
"After a day of heightening international tensions, Georgian leaders claimed that the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, which transports oil from the Caspian Sea to Turkey, had been attacked. But it is thought the bombs missed their target.
Their claims came after Russian jets struck deep into the territory of its tiny neighbour, killing civilians and ‘completely devastating’ the strategic Black Sea port of Poti, a staging post for oil and other energy supplies."
The pipeline is then described as
"...crucial to the world’s volatile energy market and the only oil and gas route that bypasses Russia’s stranglehold on energy exports from the region."
It is all about the oil, but don't expect the Stop the War coalition to raise a squeak in protest, they are only interested in the actions of the dictatorial US and UK governments not in the actions of the democratically elected government of Russia...
The huge, some might say too huge, £12.4 billion project to overhaul of the National Health Service computer systems has been a disaster from the beginning. This project has been over budget and behind schedule almost from day 1. Now I learn that Richard Granger, the previous head of the project who earned over £270,000 a year, who resigned last year will be succeeded in the role by two people. Christine Connelly and Martin Bellamy will each be paid around £200,000 a year (so increasing the cost to the taxpayer by around 40%). Ms Connelly will be the first Chief Information Officer (CIO) for Health and will focus on developing and delivering the Department’s “overall information strategy and integrating leadership across the NHS and associated bodies”, whilst Mr Bellamy will become Director of Programme and System Delivery, head of the agency called NHS Connecting for Health, responsible for the National Project for IT (NPfIT) to create 50 million electronic patient records among other overhauls of NHS systems.
An extra £130,000 a year is of course peanuts compared to the cost overruns the project has suffered so far. Does anyone believe the project will come in on budget now?
I predict Burning Our Money will cover this srory over the next few days.
I read in The Times that Gordon Brown is planning another bribe for the electorate. To follow the £2.7 billion spent pre the Crewe and Nantwich by-election, he is now planning to add another £1 billion as more than 7 million families who receive child benefit are to be given a one-off payment of £150 to help meet soaring fuel bills.
There are two key parts of The Times article that I want to examine, the first related to the electioneering aspect of this payment (my emphasis):
"Until now it had been expected that extra financial assistance would be targeted at pensioners, the low-paid and people on benefits who suffer from “fuel poverty”, defined as when more than 10% of household income is used to heat the home.
However, Brown is determined that middle-class families - whose votes will determine the outcome of the next general election - should also gain from any new handouts.
Michael Fallon, Conservative chairman of the Commons Treasury scrutiny committee, said: “This is blatant, indiscriminate electioneering in one of the final winters before the general election.”"
Gordon Brown, like Tony Blair before him, sees his role as that of winning elections and if that means creating a client state of new public sector workers, paid to do very little of value but who owe their jobs to a Labour government, then so be it - it's only taxpayers money after all. If it means slipping the electorate the odd £ billion pounds in the run up to an election then so what, it's once again only taxpayers money.
The second extract concerns how the news of this "payment" leaked:
"Details of the winter fuel payment scheme were inadvertently revealed by a top civil servant who was overheard discussing the secret strategy on a train.
Sir Brian Bender, permanent secretary at the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform, told a colleague that ministers were keen to give extra money to “ordinary people” worried about rising energy bills....
on July 25, Bender, a veteran mandarin, was travelling in a first-class carriage of the 3.05pm GNER service from Leeds to London.
A passenger who was sitting near the civil servant said she heard him disclose the prime minister’s fightback plans to a younger colleague during the journey.
“I first thought they were bankers,” said the passenger, who holds a senior position in the media. “They were talking about deals, investments and large sums of money. Then I realised they were civil servants discussing government policy.
“The two of them were having a wide-ranging conversation. They were talking about their career plans and their summer holidays, but they were mainly talking about the government plans relating to the rising price of fuel.”
Bender, whom she identified later from pictures on his department’s website, said he was returning to London to discuss the fuel plans. “It was only as we drew into the station that it became clear exactly what the plan was,” said the fellow passenger.
“I heard him say: ‘He wants to give it to the ordinary people.’ I think he was referring to Gordon Brown. His colleague suggested the extra cash would go to the needy, but he replied, ‘No, a fuel rebate for everybody on child benefit’.”"
What was the World War Two slogan - "Careless talk costs lives"; maybe we could rephrase that as "Carelessly discussed bribes may cost votes".
Ah the Olympics, the pleasure of turning on the television and being able to watch something other than football. Yesterday I enjoyed a bit of the mens' gymnastics, amazing skill and strength on display. I enjoyed a bit of Andrew Smith winning his first round badminton match, some great net play. I also enjoyed watching some beach volleyball, great...
Here's a picture of a surprise entrant in the beach basketball... and he really is concentrating on the ball; which, with the distraction of the player in front of him, really is quite a feat.
I am confused, we were told that Gordon Brown would be spending a lovely family holiday in Southwold, Suffolk and yet I read today that he was the guest interviewee at the opening event of the Edinburgh Book festival this morning. Guido Fawkes has the news that Gordon Brown
"told the audience that he’d gone to university aged 16 as the result of a school “hot-housing” experiment which had later been dumped. “I’m the result of a failed experiment…”"
However, I am more concerned about Gordon Brown's family holiday being interrupted. Will he be rushing back to Southwold tonight or will he have to spend at least one night away from the bosom of his family. Alternatively, has the family holiday in Southwold actually ended? The BBC, despite extensive web coverage of Gordon Brown's interview with Ian Rankin, seem not to be interested in this question. If this is the case, was it always meant to end so soon?
"residential buildings had also been struck, leaving a number of civilians dead. Our correspondent says injured civilians were being pulled from the buildings, which were on fire."
Do contrast that treatment of the Russian army bombing a civilian building with the howls of protest that emanate from the BBC when the Americans mistakenly bomb a "wedding party" or when Israel hit a Hezbollah unit deliberately hiding in a residential building.
Take a watch of Caroline Flint's interview on Newsnight; the piece starts at 19:40 and ends at 30:30.
One thing that shocks me is that Caroline Flint is often described as a "babe" and the "sexiest member of the cabinet". I know standards are pretty low but Caroline Flint is a real fright.
It's odd, when the US lead force invaded Iraq to rid the Country of Saddam Hussein the BBC was awash with "experts" and pundits explaining how this is all about oil. Yet when the Russians invade Georgia the word "oil" is not heard. Yet this invasion really is about oil.
In case you are not aware, Georgian oil can flow out of that country in two ways, either through Turkey and hence into Europe or through Russia. Putin wants to ensure that as much of the world's oil as possible flows through Russia's pipelines so he can have as much bargaining power and control over Europe's power supply. The Georgians know that their independence relies as much as anything on the continued use of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, a pipeline that connects the Caspian Sea's oilfields to Baku, then to Tbilisi and finally onto the Haydar Aliyev oil Terminal in the Turkish port of Ceyhan. There is also the South Caucus pipeline that transports natural gas along a similar route.
The excuses for this war are less convincing than the truth, yet they are still made and believed by many. As the BBC endlessly reminds us, Georgia is considering joining NATO, a move that Russia considers provocative. The BBC seem to think that this "provocation" in some way excuses Russia so as to invade a sovereign country and kill hundreds of people. Georgia is also at the very early stage of discussions to join the EU, they have as much a claim to do so as Turkey, and that again is described as a threat to Russia.
My fears are that this is not a one-off; control over Georgia's oil so that it was all being pumped through the Russian system would mean that the next country on the list would be under threat and that country is probably Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan has the 11th largest oil reserves in the world and most of its oil currently flows through Russian pipelines, however a deal has been done to build a pipeline to and through China, and Russia is unlikely to allow that to happen.
There are many other interesting angles to the Georgian oil story; there is even an Israeli connection as it has been proposed that oil from the BTC pipeline may be transported to eastern Asia via the Israeli oil terminals at Ashkelon and Eilat
However the key point is that Putin wants all of those south and central Asian countries oil to be fed into the Russian system and so be under his control.
I heard someone on Radio 4's Question Time last night saying that this invasion was all the West's fault (especially the Americans) for being so triumphalist at the ending of the Cold War and by humiliating Russia. These are very similar to the excuses that were made in the early 1930s for Nazi Germany; Germany was humiliated after the First World War by the terms of the Treaty of Versailles and so it is understandable that they want to assert themselves and invade Austria, the Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia etc.
What do I think will happen from here? I believe that Russia will not stop until they have control of Georgia's oil. The EU countries will do nothing other than protest gently, as they need Russian oil and gas and are scared of upsetting their supplier. The US will support the Georgian army by way of supplying them with ammunition and parts for the US equipped more modern part of their army but will not get involved militarily. Once Russia has control of Georgia's oil, Putin will look eastwards, if I was a government minister in Astana I would be very worried right now.
To reduce the West's dependence on Rusia I strongly believe that oil exploration in Alaska and the extraction of Canada's huge shale-oil reserves be made a priority. The West cannot rely on oil and gas supplied by mostly vile Middle Eastern dictatorships and a militarily resurgent Russia.
"Israel backs Georgia in Caspian Oil Pipeline Battle with Russia - Georgian tanks and infantry, aided by Israeli military advisers, captured the capital of breakaway South Ossetia, Tskhinvali, early Friday, Aug. 8, bringing the Georgian-Russian conflict over the province to a military climax."
Israel are on the side of Georgia, therefore to the BBC mind Georgia must be in the wrong and Russia in the right. The fact that Georgia is being wooed by NATO, that puppet of the USA, must have made the BBC's decision even easier to make.
Russian tanks are reported to have invaded part of the former Soviet Republic of Georgia, although the BBC are reporting this as "Russian tanks have entered Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia".
"entered", odd how the BBC mind works; America invades, Israel illegally occupies but Russia enters...
"We should be extremely suspicious whenever politicians, campaigners and ‘experts’ play the children card. Almost any kind of restriction can be justified if the young are supposedly at risk."
One piece of news regarding a data security breach is not being reported by the BBC, mind you at the moment if it isn't happening in Beijing then it probably isn't going to be reported at all. This news regards a memory stick containing the personal data of hundreds of children which has been stolen. Apparently parents of the children have been sent a letter by the BBC informing them that details such as the names, addresses, mobile phone numbers and dates of birth of children who applied to take part in a cookery show had been taken. Also on the disk were details of when the children and their parents would be away on holiday.
I presume that hard questions about data security and encryption will be asked by the BBC Newsnight team, maybe not. Any coverage at all of this story on the BBC?
Thanks to a contributor in the Comments section of Biased-BBC Victoria Derbyshire's position at BBC 5Live makes sense. Wikipedia records that:
"Derbyshire became embroiled in a tabloid scandal in 2003 after becoming romantically involved with Mark Sandell, then partner of fellow Five Live presenter Fi Glover. She now lives with Sandell and their two sons."
"an average reporter, a pretty poor presenter before becoming a brilliant and charismatic editor. Mark formerly edited the World Today on World Service Radio and before that was in charge of news programmes on Radio 5 Live and Radio 1 for the BBC"
So it seems to be the case that Victoria Derbyshire (VD) enticed Fi Glover's husband to her, then Fi Glover left 5Live and VD was rewarded with the 9-12 morning show. If this is not the correct sequence of events then I will be happy to alter my article...
Whilst you watch the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics with all their show and spectacle, I suggest you take a look at the following videos. The first set are about the Tienanmen Square Massacre of 1989. The videos are up at present but quite slow to run due to either many people trying to view them or the Chinese authorities trying to stop people from watching them by endlessly playing them. Do persevere as the Chinese regime must not be allowed to escape its recent past.
The second set are about the treatment of Tibet by the Chinese regime.
I have blogged before about Saudi Arabia and their attitude to religions other than Islam. Now I read at Mission Network News that:
"Saudi Arabia (MNN) ― The Washington-DC based human rights group, International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that Saudi Arabia deported 15 Christians on Tuesday, August 5th, for holding private worship meetings in a house in the city of Taif.
On Friday, April 25, twelve Saudi Arabian police raided a house where 16 Christians were holding a prayer meeting. The first officer to enter the house after breaking down the main gate pointed a pistol at the Christians and ordered them to hand over their resident permits and mobile phones. The other 11 police followed quickly and started searching the entire house. They confiscated an electronic drum set, an offering box with 500 Saudi Riyal in it ($130), 20 bibles, and a few Christian books.
The police initially accused the Christians of preaching the Bible and singing. They later changed the charge to holding a "dance party" and collecting money to support terrorism.
During the raid, the police mocked, questioned and harassed the Christians for four hours. Then they took them to a police station where the head of the station interrogated them. The official then wrote down their "statements" in Arabic and forced the Christians, who are immigrants and not able to read or write Arabic, to sign the statements.
After the interrogations, the Christians were incarcerated and held incommunicado. After three days, the Christians were finally released on April 27, 2008 at 8 PM.
Upon their release, one of the Christians permanently departed the country. The others, thinking that their ordeal was over, went back to their daily lives and work. But they soon received letters demanding that they leave the country immediately.
ICC's President Jeff King says this has been typical behavior of Saudi officials. "They'll say, 'We don't want political pressure.' So [once foreign Christians are] arrested, they release them quickly. The next thing you know, the whole group is deported out of the country."
While deportation isn't good, it's far better than what happens to Saudis who come to Christ. "They could be killed" says King. "They would be arrested. They would be in grave danger. And those are the cases, unfortunately, we can't talk about. There's tremendous pressure to convert them back to Islam."
The decision to deport them runs contrary to recent attempts to portray the Saudi kingdom as a beacon of reconciliation among Christians, Muslims, Jews and others. Three weeks ago, Saudi Arabia hosted an interfaith conference in Madrid, Spain. During the conference that took place from July 16-19, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia called for reconciliation among various religions.
King says this is ironic. "The [Saudi] king is saying that Christians and Muslims need to get along better. Then, look at what's happening at home! This just shows and exposes the heart of Saudi beliefs. They can spend money and spin things, and they can do PR. But what matters is what happens at home."
King says, "Deporting Christians for worshipping in their private homes shows that King Abdullah's speech is mere rhetoric, and his country is deceiving the international community about their desire for change and reconciliation."
While persecution continues in Saudi Arabia, the church is growing. "There is a tremendous hunger for Bibles in the persecuted church," King says. "You could see up to 30 people sharing one Bible. They tear off little pieces, and each person has like one book. One of our big drives is to get Bibles into the hands of these guys. It makes all the difference. I always call it 'spiritual fertilizer.'""
I think that you should be reminded of a few Saudi facts:
1) No symbols of any faith other than Islam are allowed into Saudi Arabia and the public practice of non-Muslim religions is prohibited.
2) Only Muslims are allowed into Mecca & Medina, the street signs are really quite shocking when you see them.
3) The Saudi government does not permit non-Muslim clergy to enter the country for the purpose of conducting religious services.
4) According Saudi policy for tourists, it is not permissible to bring Christian or Jewish religious symbols and books into the kingdom and they are subject to confiscation
5) Until March 1, 2004, the official government website stated that Jews were forbidden from entering the country - the situation now is less clear
Our friends the Saudis, thank the Lord that they are friends can you imagine how they would behave if they were our enemies? And whilst they expel Christians for worshipping in private, the Saudis complain about how Muslims are persecuted in Europe:
Back in October, "Saudi Arabia’s Human Rights Commission (HRC) will urge its counterparts in the European Union to ask their governments not to link terrorism to Islam and also to issue regulations to protect Muslims from prejudice and discrimination because of their faith." Standard stuff from the Saudis and not something that I would ordinarily comment upon It was the next bit that got me thinking "the government-funded rights body will also address various human rights issues in Europe: when Muslims are unjustly interrogated, treated with disrespect, physically or mentally abused, or not allowed to practice their faith freely such as Muslim girls being prevented from wearing the hijab (head cover) in some schools."
"New microchipped passports designed to be foolproof against identity theft can be cloned and manipulated in minutes and accepted as genuine by the computer software recommended for use at international airports.
Tests for The Times exposed security flaws in the microchips introduced to protect against terrorism and organised crime. The flaws also undermine claims that 3,000 blank passports stolen last week were worthless because they could not be forged.
In the tests, a computer researcher cloned the chips on two British passports and implanted digital images of Osama bin Laden and a suicide bomber. The altered chips were then passed as genuine by passport reader software used by the UN agency that sets standards for e-passports."
What a surprise, this government's forays into IT systems have been marked by the almost complete lack of success of the projects.
It is not as though the procedures used were difficult or costly, as the Times report continues:
"Using his own software, a publicly available programming code, a £40 card reader and two £10 RFID chips, Mr van Beek took less than an hour to clone and manipulate two passport chips to a level at which they were ready to be planted inside fake or stolen paper passports.
A baby boy’s passport chip was altered to contain an image of Osama bin Laden, and the passport of a 36-year-old woman was changed to feature a picture of Hiba Darghmeh, a Palestinian suicide bomber who killed three people in 2003. The unlikely identities were chosen so that there could be no suggestion that either Mr van Beek or The Times was faking viable travel documents."
The Government response was as usual in direct opposition to the evidence:
"The Home Office said last night that it had yet to see evidence of someone being able to manipulate data in an e-passport. A spokesman said: “No one has yet been able to demonstrate that they are able to modify, change or alter data within the chip. If any data were to be changed, modified or altered it would be immediately obvious to the electronic reader.”"
The BBC "report" the sentencing of Salim Hamdan, Osama Bin Laden's former driver, to 66 months in prison. Nowhere in the article do they find room for the piece of news that when Salim Hamdan was arrested at a roadblock in Afghanistan in November 2001, he had two surface-to-air missiles in the car.
The BBC where every piece of reporting has to be carefully angled to support friends and denigrate enemies.
"MI5 and MI6 could be forced to share their intelligence with the rest of Europe under new proposals from the EU.
Under the plans, seen by the Daily Telegraph, all countries would feed secret information into a central intelligence unit so that any member state can use it.
But the proposals risk hard won intelligence gathered by British agents being leaked by less scrupulous security services, particularly in the former Communist states of Eastern Europe.
Although the Government has contributed to the proposals being drawn up, Britain's security services are likely to put up stiff opposition to the plans."
Is there any area of the constituent countries lives that the EU does not want to control? The EUSSR is set to become as big a threat to freedom of speech and indeed the freedom to live as ever Nazi Germany, Stalin's Russia or Mao's China were. When will the first forced labour camps or re-education camps begin operating, I am assuming that not even the EU will resort to concentration camps; am I safe in that assumption?
This most inept of labour governments is plumbing new depths of stupidity. Following leaks that they were considering suspending all or part of the stamp duty payable on house purchases and the furore as people realised that this was having an adverse affect on the housing market, the BBC is now reporting that
"the Treasury has now said the story had been "speculation" and a "number of options" were being looked at.... in a statement, the Treasury said: "Recent news stories suggesting the government has put forward a proposal on stamp duty are simply wrong. These stories are based on speculation. "As has been said on many previous occasions, the government has made clear that there are a number of options we will need to consider to help businesses and people get through what is undoubtedly a difficult time.""
Yes that will stop the rumours in their tracks and get the housing market moving! Honestly I have very little time for Labour politicians and their apparatchiks who have so little understanding of economics and human nature that they could not have predicted what the results of the leaks would be and also who cannot see how important it is to either confirm or completely kill the story.
The BBC are pleased to "report" in a piece entitled "Beijing pollution efforts hailed" that
"The head of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, has praised Beijing's "extraordinary" efforts to cut pollution ahead of the Games.
He said there would be no danger to the health of athletes, despite continuing concerns about pollution levels."
If you read on you will discover that far from Beijing's air quality being of an acceptable standard the air quality is recorded as having
"levels of particulate matter (PM10) at 191 micrograms per cubic metre. This far exceeds the WHO target of 50 micrograms/cubic metre, and also exceeds the WHO target for developing countries of 150 micrograms/cubic metre."
The BBC as always have a headline to suit their world view and openning paragraphs to match. Any contrary views are safely presented beyond the point where most people stop reading.
The BBC are as always happy to support totalitarian states and the heads of international bodies of dubious moral standing. Can you imagine the BBC headlines if the PM10 readings at an Olympics held in the USA reached 51 micrograms/cubic metre?
When you read the latest pronouncements of the Climate Change "experts" about how sea levels will rise by 1 metre, 5 metres, 50 metres or any other figure they pluck from a flawed computer model and how we will all roast as the earth's temperature rises by 1 degree, 5 degrees, 10 degrees or any other figure they pluck from a flawed computer model, do bear in mind they were equally certain in the summer of 2006 when the Guardian reported that
"Scientists know a lot about how events will unfold...which means that whatever we do, our climate destiny is fixed for the next few decades... Rainfall will decline in the summer and the increased deluges in winter will struggle to replenish thirsty reservoirs because much of the water will run off the baked ground."
Hmmm, in august 2007 the Times reported that contrarily
"Britain is facing a flooding timebomb this autumn and winter, with huge amounts of underground water stored up by incessant summer rain ready to burst out as floods the next time heavy rains return." and "The Environment Agency is giving warning of “an enhanced flood risk” for England and Wales, although where and when any flooding strikes will depend on the weather patterns. Forecasters are predicting a wet autumn across much of Britain."
Last month The Mail reported that
"A summer of rain threatens to bring the great autumn floods The saturated ground means any more downpours could cause huge volumes of water underground to burst out - ... The Environment Agency is giving warning of “an enhanced flood risk” for England and Wales... Forecasters are predicting a wet autumn across much of Britain.... The aquifers were recharged fully during the summer, safeguarding water supplies well into next year. But the saturated ground also means that parts of the country could be on flood alert throughout autumn and winter, with no chance for the ground to dry out until the spring."
Today if you look at the BBC's weather website you will read the latest weather warnings
"Thursday 7 August WEATHER WARNING Outbreaks of rain across western parts of Scotland, especially in and around the Glasgow area, will be locally very heavy at times and will give accumulations of 15 to 20 mm. Valid until 1000BST.
Thursday 7 August SEVERE FLOOD WARNING There is 1 severe flood warning in Scotland. There are 6 further flood warnings in force in Scotland. Further updates will appear here."
So "Scientists know a lot about how events will unfold...which means that whatever we do, our climate destiny is fixed for the next few decades", do they? Really?
According to the BBC, the adulterer-in-chief Bill "give her a cigar" Clinton has said that our beloved prime minister has a "big brain and a good heart". Maybe someone should tell Bill Clinton that size isn't everything and that if Gordon Brown has a big brain then it is more likely due to hydrocephalus or raised intracranial pressure than to increased intelligence.
Why the BBC continue to pay such attention to the words of a serial liar and the second most incompetent US President of the last 40 year I do not know. Here is a summary of Bill Clinton's record as US President from Discover the networks:
"Clinton's presidency was marred by a long succession of scandals, including sexual harassment allegations, lawsuits, an accusation of rape, and, most famously, revelations that he had carried on a sexual affair with 21-year-old White House intern Monica Lewinsky. On December 19, 1998, after having perjured himself repeatedly before a grand jury, Clinton - on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice - became only the second President (after Andrew Johnson in 1868) in American history to be impeached, though he was not removed from office. In October 2001 he was disbarred from practicing law before the United States Supreme Court. He had previously had his Arkansas law license suspended for five years as a result of a disbarment lawsuit brought by a committee of the Arkansas State Supreme Court.... Of the 305,000 employees removed from the federal payroll, 286,000 (or 90%) were military cuts..... Osama bin Laden and his terrorist-related activities were well known to the United States by 1995. Clinton had an opportunity to capture him in the fall of 1998, but was unavailable. When he was finally reached, further consultation was needed with various secretaries. The two-hour window in which bin Laden could have been caught was lost. Says Patterson, "This lost bin Laden hit typified the Clinton administration's ambivalent, indecisive way of dealing with terrorism. Ideologically, the Clinton administration was committed to the idea that most terrorists were misunderstood, had legitimate grievances, and could be appeased, which is why such military action as the administration authorized was so halfhearted, and ineffective, and designed more for 'show' than for honestly eliminating a threat.""
In case you are wondering which US President might be more incompetent than Bill Clinton, the answer is of course the arch-dhimmi himself Jimmy Carter.
The BBC have a trailer for Andrew Marr's upcoming series "Britain from Above", the first episode of which will be broadcast on Sunday 10 August at 2100 on BBC One. Well worth a look, although bear in mind that the reaction of a Government minister to seeing this trailer is likely to be - "If we can track these movements, can we not tax the movements somehow?
Human Rights Watch's latest report informs us that:
"Since June 2007, when Hamas forcefully seized control in Gaza, it has conducted arbitrary arrests of political opponents, tortured detainees, clamped down on freedom of expression and assembly, and violated due process rights enshrined in Palestinian law. The victims have frequently been leaders, activists and supporters of Fatah, especially those with suspected ties to a security force or those who sought to undermine Hamas rule after its electoral win in January 2006.
In the West Bank, the Fatah-dominated authorities have committed many of the same abuses, with victims being the activists, leaders and supporters of Hamas and affiliated institutions. Fearful of a Hamas takeover of the West Bank, security forces have detained hundreds of people arbitrarily, tortured detainees, and closed media and organizations that are run by or sympathetic to Hamas."
The media are reporting breathlessly that Gordon Brown is considering suspending stamp duty in an emergency measure to kick-start the housing market. Apparently the idea, being worked on by the Treasury, is part of a package of help for those famous "hard-pressed families".
Now what might the consequences of this leaked news be? Well if you were considering purchasing a house over the next few months wouldn't you hold off in case stamp duty is reduced soon. Yes, Gordon "economic genius" Brown has managed to screw the UK housing market again. His stealth taxes on housing (or more exactly moving) have disgusted me for some time now, massive increases in the rates of stamp duty, not increasing the stamp duty bands as house prices rose and of course the introduction of HIPs. Rather than being an economic genius, Gordon Brown has been revealed as just a genius for raising taxation and wasting the proceeds. The public have just worked out that the Emperor has no clothes and the public is angry.
Are there two Gordon Browns? I only ask because Jackie Ashley's description of Gordon Brown in yesterday's Guardian Comment is Free ran thus:
"I say again, this is a principled, decent man, entirely uncorrupt" and in many ways a welcome relief from the high-kicking, look-at-me heyday of the Blairites.
A relief from the Blairites, I agree; but principled, decent and entirely uncorrupt?
The BBC failed to investigate Ken Livingstone's colleague Lee Jasper and the other members of his coterie before the ayoral election, leaving it to the London Evening Standard and Channel 4. Since the election of Boris Johnson the BBC has started to use Ken Livingstone as a new regular commentator on various political matters, has a day gone by without him being interviewed or quoted? Meanwhile the BBC have totally ignored the story exposed by the Standard that
"Eight of Ken Livingstone's closest "cronies" are to receive pay-offs totalling £1.6 million after he changed the rules before he lost the election."
The Standard explains that
"The former senior City Hall advisers were political appointments on fixed-term contracts. By law they had to lose their jobs when Mr Livingstone lost the election."
Just to make the point clear that Ken Livingstone was the man who caused this to happen, the Standard add that
"Last year, Mr Livingstone introduced a rule which allowed them severance payments by giving them the same redundancy rights as permanent employees. They are now to get an average of £200,000 each after several appointed solicitors and threatened to sue the new Mayor, Boris Johnson, for "unfair dismissal". Those getting payoffs include John Ross, Mr Livingstone's economic adviser; Redmond O'Neill, his adviser on transport; Simon Fletcher, his chief of staff, and Mark Watts, his climate change adviser, all of whom are current or former senior members of Trotskyite group Socialist Action."
Yes it's that group Socialist Action again.
"Mr Ross, Mr O'Neill and Mr Fletcher were the key members of what was dubbed the "Kenocracy," the fanatically loyal group of advisers who worked for Mr Livingstone long before he became Mayor and who imposed his will on City Hall. Others being paid off include John Duffy, Mr Livingstone's adviser for waste; Murziline Parchment, his director of major projects, and Joy Johnson, his former head of PR. None was available for comment."
Not a word on the BBC about this, if it is on their website then it is well hidden.
Can we find out how much the BBC has paid Ken Livingstone for his appearances since 1 May?
Can you imagine the level of coverage if this had been the story of a ex-Conservative mayor changing the rules so his ex-colleagues earn big payoffs at the local rate-payers expense.
This most vile Labour governments' dual track policy of criminalising as many people as possible and raising as much money from fines as feasible, seems to have moved on another level. It seems that householders who put too much rubbish in their bins will be subject to a fine of £110, meanwhile shoplifters and those "guilty" of drunken disorder will face only a £80 fine. I think we all know which fine is more likely to be collected as well. Environment Secretary, Hilary Benn, has backed these on-the-spot fines including for people who have the sheer cheek to put an extra rubbish sack out for collection next to their wheelie bin.
The Labour government want us to realise, like all good authoritarian governments do, that we owe our existence to them and that if we step even slightly out of line we will be punished. This is how authoritarian governments function, they punish and punish the responsible citizen for ever smaller infringements whilst allowing the underclass to get away with (figuratively and sometimes actually) murder as they will not pay the fines and the prisons are full. It is the same story for traffic offences where the legal driver is hounded at every turn of the wheel by speed cameras, junction control cameras, parking cctv etc. whilst the unlicensed or foreign registered driver can park where they like and drive as they like with impunity. Excuses are made for every criminal except for the generally law-abiding home-owner and car driver who are treated as guilty by default.
The Independent has an article by Johann Hari that is almost amusing it is so badly researched. Apparently Man Made Climate Change "will drown London and New York and Lagos and Kinshasa too". Let's see London, New York and Lagos are pretty much at sea-level being ports so IF the sea levels did rise dramatically they could flood. Kinshasa however, despite being almost on the River Congo, sits on a plain between 918 and 1,148 feet above sea level and so is not a great candidate for severe flooding even under the most pessimistic/crap forecasts. Read the rest of the article, then read the comments from readers. There are a lot of fools who still believe the Man Made Global Warming (MMGW) claptrap that we are being force-fed; thankfully there also some who have minds of their own and have realised that MMGW is a con.
The Labour government's promise that government plans for 300 super-surgeries, each housing up to 25 GPs, will not be imposed but agreed through consultations with local communities looks like being broken. Information gathered by the Conservatives under Freedom of Information requests shows that around half of the PCTs that responded said they would not consult on plans to build centres and some cited advice from the Department of Health as the reason for their decision. The disclosures show that just 44 of the 100 PCTs that responded intend to subject their plans to formal consultation. Six have yet to decide, while 50 said they would not be consulting the public. Several mentioned Department of Health advice that there is no legal obligation to carry out a formal consultation, and that it is a matter for local discretion. Others said they could not consult on something which was a Government directive, or that they had not been given the time to seek the views of the public.
Has there even been such a dishonest government as this Labour one and are they assisted in their dishonesty by a compliant media, especially the BBC?
Sunday's papers had details of new technology to be fitted to cars that would report back to councils about pot-holes and congestion whilst receiving information about traffic jams etc. This is a front, the real purpose of such devices will be to track the movements of all cars at all times and of course to measure vehicle speeds and so issues fines.
It looks as though this Labour government really do believe that they actually are the political wing of the British people and as this is the case why not fund propaganda pieces for television broadcasting. It appears that the Labour government have spent £2 million on television programmes that promote government policies without the programmes making clear that they were funding the making of the programmes. Read more about this story here and wonder at the sheer cheek of this Labour government, they really don't care about propriety.
I am sad to hear of the death of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn the writer of one of may favourite books of my teenage years -A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Read the book and think about the inhumanity of Stalin's Soviet Union and what has happened to the British supporters of his regime.
I think that Andy Murray just might be the real deal. I have been wondering about a US Open title during the next 5 years, after last night's victory I wonder if it might come sooner.
There is nothing sadder than a childless couple. It breaks my heart to see them relaxing around swimming pools in Florida, sitting all suntanned and miserable on the decks of their boats -- trotting off to Europe like lonesome fools. It's an empty life. Nothing but money to spend, more time to enjoy and a whole lot less to worry about.
The poor childless couple are so wrapped up in themselves, you have to feel sorry for them. They don't fight over the child's discipline, don't blame each other for the child's most obnoxious characteristics, and they miss all the fun of doing without for the child's sake. They just go along, doing whatever they want, buying what they want and liking each other. It's a pretty pathetic picture.
Everyone should have children. No one should be allowed to escape the wonderful experience that accompanies each stage in the development of the young -- the happy memories of sleepless nights, coughing spells, tantrums, diaper rash, debts, "dipso" baby sitters, saturated mattresses, emergencies and never-ending crises.
How dismal is the peaceful home without the constant childish problems that make a well-rounded life and an early breakdown; the tender, thoughtful discussions when the report card reveals the progeny to be one step below a moron; the end-of-the-day reunions with all the joyful happenings recited like well-placed blows to the temples.
Children are worth it. Every moment of anxiety, every sacrifice, every complete collapse pays off as a fine, sturdy adolescent is reached. The feeling of reward the first time you took the boy hunting -- he didn't mean to shoot you, the lad was excited. Remember how he cried? How sorry he was? And how much better you felt after the blood transfusion? These are the times a man with a growing son treasures -- memories that are captured forever in the heart and the limp.
Think back to the night of romantic adventure when your budding daughter eloped with the village idiot. What childless couple ever shared in the stark realism of that drama? Aren't you a better man for having lived richly, fully, acquiring that tic in your left eye? Could a woman without children touch the strength and heroism of your wife as she tried to fling herself out of the bedroom window?
The childless couple live in a vacuum. They fill their lonely days with golf, vacation trips, dinner dates, civic affairs, tranquility, leisure and entertainment. There is a terrifying emptiness without children, but the childless couple are too comfortable to know it.
You just have to look at them to see what the years have done: He looks boyish, unlined and rested; she's slim, well-groomed and youthful. It isn't natural. If they had had kids, they'd look like the rest of us -- worn out, wrinkled and exhausted.
"A year ago, last Thursday, I was strolling in the zoo, When I met a man who thought he knew the lot. He was laying down the law about the habits of baboons, And the number of quills a porcupine has got.
So I asked him, "What's that creature there?". He answered, "Oh, it's a h-elk". I might have gone on thinking that was true. If the animal in question hadn't put that chap to shame, And remarked, "I h-ain't a h-elk. I'm a g-nu".
"I'm a g-nu, I'm a g-nu, The g-nicest work of g-nature in the zoo. I'm a g-nu, How do you do? You really ought to k-now w-ho's w-ho."
"I'm a g-nu, spelt G-N-U. I'm g-not a camel or a kangaroo. So let me introduce, I'm g-neither man or moose, Oh, g-know, g-know, g-know, I'm a g-nu!"
I had taken furnished lodgings down at Rustington-On-Sea, Whence I travelled on to Ashton-Under-Lime it was actually. And the second night I stayed there I was wakened from a dream, Which I'll tell you all about... some other time.
Among the hunting trophies on the wall above my bed, Stuffed and mounted, was a face I thought I knew. A bison? No, it's not a bison. An ocapi? It's unlikely, really. Could it be a hartebeest? When I seemed to hear a voice: "I'm a... g-nu..."
"I'm a g-nu, A g-nother g-nu! I wish I could g-nash my teeth at you. I'm a g-nu, How do you do? You really ought to k-now w-ho's w-ho."
"I'm a g-nu, spelt G-N-U, Call me 'bison' or 'ocapi' and I'll sue. G-nor am I in the least, Like that dreadful hartebeest, Oh, g-no, g-no, g-no... G-know, g-know, g-know, I'm a g-nu... G-know, g-know, g-know, I'm a g-nu!"
A report commissioned by the Human Genetics Commission said the DNA profiles of one million innocent people which are currently stored on the national database should be destroyed. Unfortunately this authoritarian Labour government will not rest until every one of us has our details on a DNA database, carry an ID card, is monitored 24/7 and is chipped so our movements are tracked. Take a trip to No2ID for details of how to oppose the ID card and National Identity Register aspects of Labour totalitarianism. Go soon before access to such sites is banned.
Gorodn Brown is reported to be planning a 1 September Cabinet reshuffle, so he can hit Number 10 running when he returns from his holiday and the Beijing Olympics. Apparently Gordon Brown thinks that his fortunes will be turned around by injecting fresh, young talent such as Jim Murphy, the Europe Minister, and Liam Byrne, the Immigration Minister into Cabinet positions - I can feel the buzz on the streets already, can't you? This buzz is no doubt being helped by rumours that Gordon Brown might move out of the Cabinet such incredibly high profile figures as Des Browne, the part-time Defence Secretary, Paul Murphy, the Welsh Secretary, and even Hilary Benn, the Environment Secretary. I am feeling re-energised, are you? The icing on the cake is that Gordon Brown may be contemplating moving Alistair Darling to the Foreign Office in a job swap with David Miliband - rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic is a phrase that comes to mind.
Poor Gordon, being Prime Minister must have seemed such a wonderful proposition. If he wasn't such an awful fraud I'd almost feel sorry for him.
The BBC are being rather coy about Katerina Thanou Olympic history. In an article entitled " IOC meets amid Beijing concerns" the BBC include some commentary about katerina Thanou, thus:
"The IOC was going to discuss whether to allow Katerina Thanou to compete at the Games, but it seems a final decision has been delayed until next Thursday.
She was one of two Greek sprinters involved in a drug scandal that completely dominated the start of the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
She withdrew from those Games and has since served a two-year doping ban given to her by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
But the IOC has reserved the right to consider her eligibility for these Games.
Ms Thanou's lawyer has threatened to sue the IOC if she is barred from competing."
Odd I thought Ms Thanou was the athlete who according to Wikipedia
"on the day prior to the opening ceremony, Thanou and her training partner Konstantinos Kenteris failed to attend a drugs test, and later the same night were hospitalised, claiming they had both been injured in a motorcycle accident. In the ensuing doping scandal, Kenteris and Thanou announced their withdrawal from the Games on August 18 after a hearing before the Disciplinary Commission of the IOC, for what they described to be "in the interests of the country." An official Greek investigation into their alleged accident, ruled that it had been staged.
The missed test in Athens was the duo's third violation of the summer and they were consequently provisionally suspended by the IAAF on 22 December 2004. In June 2005, however, the athletes were cleared of all charges by the Greek athletics federation. Their coach Christos Tsekos was blamed for the missed tests and suspended for four years, but was cleared on separate allegations of distributing banned substances. After a long legal battle, on 26 June 2006 prior to a final ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the athletes reached an out of court settlement with the IAAF accepting anti-doping rule violations of 3 missed tests between 27 July and 12 August 2004 (in breach of Rule 32.2(d)) and a failure to provide a urine and a blood sample on 12 August 2004 (in breach of Rule 32.2(c)). In return, the more serious charges against them, those of evasion and refusal to provide a sample, were dropped.[1] They have been eligible to compete since 22 December 2006."
Just the sort of athlete that should feel right at home in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
MI5 are recruiting IT professionals and their advertisement in a recent Computer Weekly included this line
"Due to the recruitment and vetting process, your application could take up to 6 months. You must limit those you tell about your application to your partner and/or immediate family."
From Burning Our Money comes this anecdote that I thought worth repeating:
"Tyler went to hospital for a regular check up last week. Fortunately, he has BUPA, so it was at the local private hospital. It has never had a single case of C diff or MRSA. But in conversation with a consultant who also works in the local NHS hospital, he was told the latter - despite its recent deep clean - is still rife with the bugs: "they've colonised the place". "So what's the solution?" asked Tyler. "Burn it down" was the serious reply. "Burn it down, and rebuild from scratch - it's the only sure way". And that's what we've come to."
Vincent Cable is the BBC's favourite expert economist politician, always on-hand with his BBC approved views. However his piece in today's Independent that includes this thought:
"There are demands for a windfall tax. But this largely misses the point. The headline profits usually relate to global operations, of which only a modest part is in the UK. Even if there were a large UK-based windfall tax, the same logic would apply to wheat farmers, who have also benefited from rising world prices. What is more, all these arguments for a windfall tax ignore the inconvenient truth that North Sea producers already face a windfall tax."
Something tells me that the BBC will not be asking Vincent Cable on to discuss this policy as the BBC have already decided how they feel about a "windfall tax".
"Federal agents may take a traveler's laptop computer or other electronic device to an off-site location for an unspecified period of time without any suspicion of wrongdoing, as part of border search policies the Department of Homeland Security recently disclosed.
Also, officials may share copies of the laptop's contents with other agencies and private entities for language translation, data decryption or other reasons, according to the policies, dated July 16 and issued by two DHS agencies, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement."
Yes that is right, US federal agents can take your laptop from you on entry to the US, keep it for as long as they want, copy any data off of it and transcribe that data as a permanent record AND all of that without any suspicion of wrongdoing.
According to the Washington Post report
"the policies cover "any device capable of storing information in digital or analog form," including hard drives, flash drives, cellphones, iPods, pagers, beepers, and video and audio tapes. They also cover "all papers and other written documentation," including books, pamphlets and "written materials commonly referred to as 'pocket trash' or 'pocket litter.'"
So a business visitor carrying the usual laptop, Blackberry, cellphone, couple of USB memory sticks, camera plus memory cards and some CDs could lose all of that equipment and data storage on the whim of a Federal agent, and lose it for an unspecified length of time.
My self-imposed NotaSheep travel ban on visiting the USA seems not to be ending any time soon.
The BBC are "reporting" that there has been a "Reduction in insolvency figures", well that's the headline. The detail shows something slightly different, whilst:
"Government figures have shown that the number of people declared insolvent in England and Wales fell slightly in the three months to June. The number of individual insolvencies stood at 24,553, which was 2% down compared with the previous three months and 8.3% below the same period in 2007."
Also:
"But company liquidations were up by 11.6% on previous quarter, to 3,560."
So individual insolvencies are down 2% on the previous three months and that is worth the headline "Reduction in insolvency figures", whilst company liquidations are up by nearly six times that amount and that is worth just one line.
The BBC, trying to prop up the record of their Labour friends.
This government has become worryingly authoritarian, their attitude seems to be that the public cannot be trusted to eat, drink, drive or smoke without warnings, fines and controls. Now their beady little eyes have alighted on an area where freedom of speech seems unfettered, the blogosphere. The government can exercise a degree of control over the traditional media whether that be via a Quango such as the Press Complaints Commission or Ofcom or via putting a party supporter in charge, such as at the BBC. The blogosphere can say whatever they want to say and blogs such as Guido Fawkes and Devils Kitchen are therefore hugely popular. These blogs, and others, are guilty of not following the "narrative" as set by the government and so must be regulated and restricted.
So the news that the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport select committee was looking into setting up an "independent" internet watchdog, with responsibility for drawing up guidelines that social networking sites, the blogosphere, website owners and search engines would be expected to follow; did not exactly cause me to sit up in shock. The initial proposals would set-up a new internet watchdog which would operate in a similar way to other industry bodies such as the Press Complaints Commission, covering accuracy, discrimination and intrusion. The watchdog would not (at least initially) have any statutory powers to impose fines but would investigate complaints and most likely publish its decisions in instances when its guidelines have been breached. In time the "light-touch" regime will be deemed to have failed and so a Labour government would say that it was being forced to bring in legislation to regulate the dangerous blogosphere. This legislation would be justified as being for "the protection of children" and the "prevention of terrorism" and "hate speech". All blogs will need to be approved by the regulator, for which a fee would be paid. So the good and the investigative blogs that have uncovered the sleaze of this Labour government would be shut down, so keeping the glare of publicity off of the sleaze merchants. The Quango would be manned by the usual collection of left-wing supporters of anti-thought crime legislation who would positively get off on being able to further restrict real free-speech in this Country. Be of no doubt that this proposal is about control and censorship, job creation for like minded in the new regulatory body and of course raising money through registration fees.
I am regretting using the phrase David Miliband keeps it up as the title for a post about David Miliband's leadership ambitions as that image allied with that in Jesse Armstrong's piece in today's Guardian Comment is Free entitled "Raise the dread flag - We've now heard the foreign secretary's very quiet roar - and noticed that bulge in his trousers" has left me feeling rather queasy. Read the article by Jesse Armstrong by all means but beware of the comments section, some of them take the bulge in the trousers analogy far, far too far.
There is a lot of speculation around this matter and I have found a little poll on the Hillary CLinton Forum. The poll is entitled
"If Obama Was The Nominee: How Would You Vote In The General Election?"
and the results are: If Obama was the nominee: I would NOT VOTE - 5.16% If Obama was the nominee: I would write in HILLARY - 17.42% If Obama was the nominee: I would vote for OBAMA - 6.45% If Obama was the nominee: I would vote for McCAIN - 69.03% If Obama was the nominee: I would vote for NADAR - 1.61% None of the Above - 0.32%
Is that the Sarah Palin effect? No this vote finished before Barack Obama was adopted as the Democratic party candidate. I wonder how Sarah Palin's appointment has affected these figures.
If you look at the comments section on this thread you will see many people still very angry at the disenfranchisement of Florida and Michigan, with whose votes being counted Hillary Clinton might have beaten Barack Obama.
The Telegraph reports that "Gordon Brown's personal popularity has fallen to an historic low". This must be good news for David Miliband, Harriet Harman, Jack Straw, Alan Johnsone and the rest of the runners and riders, mustn't it? No it isn't as The Telegraph/YouGov poll also reports that:http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=3893698629458358623 Under Gordon Brown, Labour trail the Conservatives 25 : 47 However: under David Miliband this would drop to 24:47 under Jack Straw this would drop to 24:45 under Alan Johnson this would drop to 19:49 under Ed Balls this would drop to 18:50 (Lib Dems on 18%) - popular chap Ed "so what" Balls, isn't he For some reason Harriet Harman's name does not appear but I cannot see her getting many votes from men.
There is one possible Labour leader that would improve upon Gordon Brown's figures; he has the experience, the name recognition and the dreadful wife - yes, it's Tony Blair who would improve the figures to 32:41...
