Who are "the people which matter in Britain"?

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso is reported to have said yesterday that (my emphasis):
"We are now closer than ever before. I'm not going to break the confidentiality of certain conversations, but some British politicians have already told me: 'If we had the euro, we would have been better off',"

"This crisis has emphasised the importance of the euro, and also of Britain"

"I don't mean this will happen tomorrow, I know that the majority (of British people) are still opposed, but there is a period of consideration underway and the people which matter in Britain are currently thinking about it"

"I don't mean this will happen tomorrow, I know that the majority (of British people) are still opposed, but there is a period of consideration underway and the people which matter in Britain are currently thinking about it"Lovely, the EU's attitude to democracy in one sentence, unfortunately it is also indicative of Gordon Brown and this Labour government's attitude to democracy as well.

As the £ Sterling falls through the floor, down again today against the $US and the Euro, maybe we are closer to joining the Euro than most people would believe. Don't forget that Gordon Brown may use the possibility of joining the Euro as a political weapon to open up splits in the Conservative party. Don't forget that Gordon Brown's only interest is winning the next election, he may be prepared to sacrifice anything in order for this to happen; that may well include the currency.
